What's the best bang for buck Android that I could buy today in Johannesburg with minimum waiting time?

I'm thinking the Motorola G would be a winner but the 5 day waiting time from Orange is too long.

EDIT: Thanks for the reply's! - Id prefer something with a larger screen 4"+, with decent DPI. I spend a lot of time on my phone with GPS, email, telegram, Video, Reddit. How is Zest T1 in this category?

You wont find a good budget - midrange device locally. It sounds like you are looking in the midrange bracket(max 3500)

You should consider the following:

Sony e4g
Moto g
Huawei P8 lite
Huawei G7
LG G3 s

From those options I would say the Sony e4g is best bang for your buck. It has a 4.7 inch screen, a good processor + gpu but the only con will be that it doesnt have a 720p screen. I personally dont think that is a big deal.

If you are looking for future updates then you should buy the moto g. The new moto g will launch in 2 months time with a better processor and more ram.

I think you should buy a cheap phone until the new moto g launches.

LG G2 is very good for its price IMO. Snapdragon 800 with FHD and a good battery life.

Brand new you can get them for R4500, or about R2000 if you look on classifieds in second hand market.

Depends what you plan on using the deice for. Hisense U971, H3 and H6 are all bang for buck bu they aren't for the hardcore user that needs to game and run intensive apps. The Huawei P7 is more expensive and comes in currently R4899. Might as well go contract and get the P7 or M4 Aqua.

I ran into the same problem - in the end I ordered a Moto G 4G (2nd gen) from Orange. Do not believe the 5 days - it will be 14 days. Brilliant phone!

Does anybody know why there are no midrange phones available locally?

You can also go pick up a Steppa or the like from MTN or Vodacom.

Really depends what your use of the device is.

If you're looking an entry level phone, try the Voda Smart 4 mini. It's going for R799 at the Edcon Group stores, bought one for a family member this weekend and it's perfoming well.

From all these entry level phones, what is quite easily rooted/romed?

Thinking to buy one to replace my galaxy pocket, bur must be android.

Vodafone Smart 4 Power (LTE) for R999, you can gsmarena it, I own one. Rooted. Or what NiTeD said. It's miniature version for R799. Same phone. Difference is LTE, battery and screen size.

The phones are easy to root, but ROMs you won't find a lot for (the cheap MTN/Vodacom phones)

The best bang for buck cheap phone I could find was the top end Gobii from Kalahari - but you can't get those any more. And it turns out the build quality of them is rather meh.

The next best thing I could find with the same spec or better was this HiSense. It's a good phone, got one for my dad.

Played around with that phone and it's an all-round solid device.
