Hi guys, im looking for a blu ray player with the best dvd HD up-conversion as well as high quality picture and audio on blu rays. I would prefer to have one without any streaming features, as i dont want to pay extra for features that i would never use, i also have a media player already so it doesnt need to have media player features either.

Any tips ?

BTW i have a ps3 but i prefer using it for my gaming only.

What's your budget? You can get a decent Sony for under R2,000 or an Oppo for a whole lot more.

Honestly, you've already got it, from the standalone BR players to the PS3, the PS3 is pretty much one of the better, yes you do get some expensive BR players out there that might beat it, but when you've got it why spend more?

It was one of the best - but even the entry level are ahead.

However it depends whether you will notice and care

My budget is anything <2000. Im gonna keep this in a different room to the ps3. I would prefer a sony one, but there is so many variations that concentrate on features such as streaming etc. I just want one with very good upscaling and picture quality.

Really? Cool thought it still beat those under R1000 ones.

what exactly makes the others so much better? If I may ask...
really interested to know..

I know the belief often is that Sony crammed about R70,000.00 worth of features into the R3,000.00 box - but it's not really true :/

EDIT : Sharpness, colour, contrast, smoothness etc It would depends on how anal he is and what othequipment he uses.

Okay, now you really lost me...
what features are these that you are talking about?

Okay...is it visible difference though... is the improvement worth the extra cash?

They're not te features - the PS3 has everything (or nearly everything!) that the standalone has.

It's image quality - and no, the improvement is not worth the extra cash in most instances.

Beware some blueray players do not output HD sound to a amp. They are limited to 5.1

One of the best, if not the best.

You're not one of those that believes that every PS3 had R70,000.00 of technology in it - are you?

I've a guy tell me the Blu Ray player beats a Meridian R50,000.00 player ... the processor slaughters a dedicated R30,000.00 Yamaha processor, the media section annihilates everything on the market. The PS3 was THE ultimate high end home theater machine ever and it has been for the past 5 years since release.

While it's great and fantastic value - it's not the best at everything. Rather a jack of all trades, master of none ...

I think the only difference soundwise between the Phat and slim - is bitstream output.

Both can do everything onboard, while the slim can send it to an external processor

True my slim sends trueHD to my avr bitstream over Hdmi.

Dont know about that figure, but yes you're leveraging the economies of scale resulting from it being a popular games consle. I mean what other standalone Bluray player has a cluster 7 re-programmable cell processors?

But the real beauty of the PS3's architecture is that its a moving target. Unlike standard Bluray player where much of its fuctionality/performance is constrained by the hardware (chips) included for that purpose, the PS3 emulates this hw functionality in software. So as new PS3 firmware is released (and it happens regularly) the capabilities & performance are continually being upgraded.

Thats why I invested in a dedicated PS3 (160 slim) just for Bluray/DVD/media duties, because its so future proof. Obviously there are some hardware limitations that are unavoidable e.g. ...

PS3 doesn't do DTS-HD and TrueHD audio does it?
Yes it does, but there is a limitation to outputing HD audio and 3D video simulataneous due the bitrate constraints of its HDMI 1.3a port.
