Best brand car batteries

Hands down, Varta, best batteries I have ever used in any of my cars but they are costly and supply is an issue at the moment. I put an Enertec in to my wife's Q3 recently as a good friend co-owns Enertec so I get all my batteries from him.

For it's a tossup between Varta and Duracell. Varta being a German brand and you get 24 month warranty whereas Duracell you get 36 month warranty from TWT. I buy my Varta batteries from https://battery24.co.za/ and pricing is very good compared to other brands. Pricing on their website is estimate only. Rather ask for a quote and it should be lower than the advertised pricing.

Trying to find Varta in Durbs is next to impossible ughh
I bought a Varta 646 last year from Pinetown Battery, they did not have stock on hand but sourced one same day. I phone them at 10:00 and had the battery fitted about 13:00. Not sure if they are still able to source them but worth a shot?

Best is the one your car came with.
The battery in my Hyundai Elantra lasted the entire 7 years that I had it before trading it in. I have no idea what brand it was, maybe I should have checked but almost never had a look under the hood, it had a service plan so there never was any reason to open it up.

Varta if you can find.

Im currently runing duratec batteries for a number of years in my e39 and kia picanto, no issues and at the price I could purchase 2 vartas, so it made sense at the time. Would buy them again.

I only had 2 batteries in my 2005Polo since new. Varta as OEM lasted just over 11 years, while the replacement Duracell is still in today making it nearly 6 years. At the time to have the Varta replaced, I could not find one fast enough.

An AGM battery will last you a very long time. Probably 7-10 years depending on brand. The OEM battery in our Merc was a Varta AGM. Lasted nearly 9 years. It gave up during covid wave 1-2 when the car wasnt being used often. Might have lasted a bit longer otherwise

Yeah I looked at AGM batteries (mainly used in stop start cars) but damn they are double the price of a normal battery. I guess with double the lifespan then it makes sense. Soon they'll all be lithium ion I guess.

Lead acids cope much better with high temperatures of the engine bay where most batteries spend their lives, I think they will still be with us for a long time, there is just no compelling case to change to lithium, unless the manufacturers can find a way to profit from it, like having to bring your car for battery services where they put the battery on a charger to balance the cells and the service just happens to cost thousands of rands.

I can recommend Varta. Have one in my Polo for around 8 years now. Car has an aftermarket audio system and sits for most of the week as I dont use it as a daily driver.

Still starts on the turn every time. Will replace the Willard in my bakkie with a Varta when it needs replacing.
