So my pops wants to stream movies, series and doccies during the daytime. I only have an after hours account from 6pm, but I want to get him something to get proper streaming without any buffering. I do have a 10 meg line. What would be better and cost effective.

1 - Capped account, maybe Afrihost 50Gb or 100GB account or Telkom perhaps.
2 - Uncapped account which would be a waste actually, which ISP?
3 - Dunno if a Business account would be an overkill?
I don't want any buffering when he watches something.

So if anyone can give me good advice on which route to go.

:o

You pay according to your line speed with uncapped accounts so I would say capped (AH) would be the better choice as you get your full speed regardless.

I wouldn't touch TI with a 10 foot pole ;)

When it comes to "Family" rather just get everything from one place. Telkom uncapped will be best for him.

2meg for one stream, 4meg for two streams.

The requirements a little vague:
- How many hours are you stream for (worst case 8am-5pm = 8hrs) ?
- Viewing quality (StdD or HD)?

If you're streaming HD for 8hrs a day, then a capped account will be too expensive
8hrs a day of SD, then I'd suggest a 2Mb business account

alternatively, enqueue downloads for the evening before and get a 2Mb standard account.

I have a 10meg Telkom Internet Uncapped premium account, and while Netflix and Hulu and Youtube stream fairly well after hours and weekends, it really doesn't work during daytime. Between 8am and 5pm, it buffers for 1 minute, plays for 30 seconds, buffers for 1 minute....

I'm also curious about using a capped account rather. I barely go over 60GB per month (Netflix SD quality runs at about 350 - 400MB per hour).

Mostly Netflix and SD quality movies. My best bet then is Afrihost 100GB account then.

Afrihost Home Uncapped works fine for streaming. All 'live services' run at 100% the speed you ordered no matter the time of day. Anything your dad does (unless he's not your average dad) will fall into 'live services' (VoIP, streaming, browsing, gaming).

I'm on an Afrihost 4mb Home Uncapped and can personally vouch for this as even though downloads and P2P are occasionally shaped during the day (to less than 25% line speed, ~75kbps), I can still watch 720p YouTube videos and Twitch at medium quality (SD) without buffering.

I can't say any good words for OpenWeb and WebAfrica, as I was with them previously and everything was shaped ('throttled') from just normal daily use. OpenWeb just simply doesn't work during the day; WebAfrica shapes everything once you're 3 stars or below, and if you're going to be streaming you'll probably hit less than 3 stars fairly quickly.

You could always go for Mweb, since they don't shape or throttle until you hit their threshold, which are reasonably high for their Premium Home Uncapped packages (200GB for 2Mb, 400GB for 4Mb).

But if you're on a tight budget, I'd recommend Afrihost Home Uncapped over Mweb Premium since they both run perfectly, only Afrihost is cheaper but downloads and P2P are shaped.

I find it strange for me. When I was on the standard uncapped from afri, Streaming was a dream on Youtube, Twitch etc . But torrents were getting shaped quite a lot.

When I switched to there business package. Torrents run at full speed 24/7 , ( No jokes ). Yet streaming is like at 70 - 80% of my line. Don't ask me why.

So if you your main thing is streaming. Standard afri uncapped acc will do fine :)

You didn't mention netflix anywhere there in your comment and have heard that it's not treated as "realtime" like youtube which is why I recommended capped, less money.

I truly can't stand the steaming pile of dung that is the Telkom Uncapped service. It is my intention to change to a new ISP - please will you guys let me know of your experiences and whom you rate as the best all round ISP for :

Streaming - Hulu + Netflix (regular streaming Monday to Monday - especially via netflix for little one animated content).
Gaming - League of Legends, COD and other MMO titles. Depending on updates and titles.
Also downloading via International News Servers. (+/- 200gb)

Monthly mixed usage is about max 300-400 gigs, please can you guys let me know what your experiences have been like and your recommendations.

Although I'm a little bias here :D I would recommend a Web Africa capped account and you can sign up for our free 2gb for life account to test it out. Just move the slider to the 1gb account.
