I saw some questions around the best kit and i don't believe something like that exists. Most kits come with the proper equipment but with poor cabling and/or some restriction. Some kits come with 2 x Domes and 2 x Bullets with poor IP(water and dust protective) ratings. Some distributors supply kits but only with RG cable so we tend to build customer specific kits at times as and when needed. We work with Hikvision, Dahua and Provision, all 3 offering a similar quality although most client installations differ somewhat, i.e. monitor, hdmi cable, camera quality etc. Hikvision and Dahua seems to have a better/sharper image than Provision while Provision/Dahua offers a 36 month exchange(no repairs) warranty which can't be overlooked. Most of our installations has been Provision due to price and we have absolutely no complaints about them. We don't supply any funny brands and prefer to not even work on them. See picture of workmanship below - note the dvr is not fixed(thus skew) at this point due to a bigger hard drive that had to be installed.

The picture below is of a 16CH 2MP Provision DVR with 18CH PSU, 13 x 2MP Bullets, 1 x Covert PIR housing 2MP camera with IR and 2 x 2MP Varifocal Lens Domes, Balun setup with CAT5e, 2TB hard drive and days of our elbow grease with 2 guys. Setup to cellular phones and Desktop PC's for managers.

Both Hikvision and Dahua have major backdoors in their hardware, firmware encoded admin credentials for "remote support purposes" according to each manufacturer.

They are now banned in US Government installs due to this and other issues around Chinese manufactured hardware calling home: https://ipvm.com/reports/ban-law

If you put a Hikvision or Dahua hardware device on a network , it can and will be hacked , regardless of network security protocols implemented.

Please read my statement again: Hik doesn't rebrand cameras, cheap Chinese brands are actually Hik rebrands or OEMs of Hik themselves: https://ipvm.com/reports/hik-oems-dir
Putting a camera directly on the Internet is not a good idea. I don’t care whose camera it is.

Friend got 2 camera's on street view, one hidden in a bird feeder / post box thing, the other stand out like a real camera. When they did shop, the went the secret camera route.

Hi
What do you think of this system and quote?

Hi DieBeer, i can try my best to assist you. The quotation doesn't seem to be unreasonable however, when looking at the quotation, they are not mentioning the brand etc. It seems to be Provision based on the Product code.
They are offering you a 1080P/2MP DVR with only 1.3MP cameras
Your PSU is only 12A and can sometimes be an issue for future power supply on additional cameras especially when using vari focal lens cameras. Pay a few Rands more and get a 20A PSU.
Why they charging R500 to setup your cellular phone is not cool. This takes 10 minutes depending on location of modem and dvr.
You are more than welcome to contact me via Private Message to discuss a quotation and possibly a site visit.

Thanks I will

I agree with above posts on security, there's been quite a bit of chatter in recent years about back doors into these camera systems.

Not only would they have access to your cameras, but I'd be more worried about them then having access to your home network.

My rule in my house, only one port is forwarded and that goes to my openvpn container running. If I want to view my cameras it's one press of the oven client on my phone and then I view my cameras.

Nothing is ever 100% secure, but this is at least another layer of security.
