Hello all,

My Rabbit got to my speaker cables, which are now barely hanging on for dear life after I mended them as best I could. Their health and physical condition, however, remains precarious.

Can any of you good sirs advise me on a decent but cheap 2.1 system?

The victim was an old Creative 2.1, ..so the replacement doesn't have to be stellar, just something capable.

Price range, hmm, how about R400-R500? Too optimistic?

Go find a pawn shop and find a decent NAD, Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer stereo amp.
Next get a decent pair of monitor or bookshelf speakers, Mission, Monitor Audio, B&W, Polk, Paradigm etc and you will have a excellent setup that beats any pc speaker system.

I've got a pair of old Sony speakers that were pretty awesome after fiddling with the amp's EQ, ..bu the black tape/cd/radio/aux amp part is rlllly f'd up. Could I take the speakers to someone who knows what amp to match to them?

What speakers are they, model etc and how old are they. Sony has never been really great at making speakers imho.

What amp & model?

Creative are still around. Bought a friend a Creative A220 2.1 - used mainly for Skype, with the occasional movie - for < R250 from Sybaritic. She's thrilled - though, I must warn, she is also no audiophile ... :)

Stick to Logitech or Creative. Creative's after-sales service is not great although they do offer best value.

SBS-A320 are good value at around R300 - http://asia.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=789&product=19816&listby=usage

If I may, I would suggest saving to R1,000 and then getting some second-hand Logitech Z-2300's...

Krator speakers are also pretty good, these are around R625 usually:

Krator Neso2 - N2-21030 - 2.1 channel , all wood enclosure , dual driver - 4" unit wool mixed paper core driver + 1" treble driver , 9mm reinforced MDF wood box , 30w RMS , RCA+2x 3.5mm input with 3.5mm headphone jack , volumn+treble+bass control on unit - titanium silver http://global.krator-global.com/main/prod_in.aspx?mnuid=1710&modid=28&pcid=193&ifid=91&prodid=1215

Creative, Logitech and Altech Lansing all have decent quality speakers in your price range. Personally, I'd avoid second hand speakers simply because you don't know how they were (mis)treated by the previous owner.
The Krator's also look nice and seem good on paper. I haven't heard them so I cannot judge.

Ooh they're back at the flat now, I'll have to remember to check tonight!

Thanks to everyone else who replied! Gonna sort through all the info when I get a spare mo! :)

+1 on the Divoom.

I have the Titan777 system, cost around R280.

45W RMS, perfect for a room, even sounds good connected to my PS3.

Try to get a 2.2 set. I know Divoom and Ozaki make them. They sound better than Creative and Logitechs 2.1 entry level sets :)

I also have the Divoom Titan 777. Not going to win any awards, but I don't think you could get anything else better for the price. I am very happy with mine, have it connected to my htpc at the moment.
