Can anyone advise of a good computer that would make using Photoshop, CorelDraw, etc (and maybe even After Effects) a pleasure. I really want one that doesn't seem to be taking strain.

I need to keep the cost down so if you could recommend a good distributor (we're registered at most) where I could buy a new (or better a refurbished) system I would be grateful. Or if someone in the Cape Town area has one for sale?

Thanks

I'm using a 64bit based PC for Photoshop and loving it. It's an oldish quad core, Q6600 with 4GB DDR2 memory on Windows 7. The newer 45nm quads can do 6GB DDR3 memory so those should be even faster!

With corel draw and photoshop i find having a ssd is far better than i7 or some super computer :D.

I use a q9550 with 4 gb and a 128gb ssd and you cannot believe how much faster both programs. I tested my i7 system with a normal 7200rpm drive and wow my q9550 with ssd whipped it silly :D

What is your budget?

Thanks for the advice. Any recommendation as to when I can buy a good built machine at a fair price in the CT area. I've having a bit of a nightmare as my notebook just died and my old one can't take the strain.

Ok, within that budget:

1. Do you require a Microsoft OS? If so, which one?
2. Do you require a graphics card? Or will onboard be fine?

I'm guessing that you just need the tower and no peripherals?

Thanks but I'm not looking for a quote as my company are signed up with all distributors. I'm just looking for advice. On board graphic? Do I need a graphics card or will the Onboard be ok?

Sure, no problem. Photoshop is still primarily a 2D application. I know that CS4 can take advantage of some GPU power for certain tasks but RAM and CPU will still be be relatively more important. So, within that budget, it would be best to stick with onboard. I'll see what we can work out, to give you a rough idea of what to go for when you're looking at purchasing from a disty.

Not just that, the w/r speeds are far superior to a normal drive so when dealing with massive files it will work at speed a 7200rpm can only dream.

I would not recommend amd for this either.

If you can buy from suppliers, look for the i5 750, a cheap intel p55 mobo, 4gb memory to start but buy 2 x 2gb stick so you can add more ram when you got free cash
