Best/easiest Media centre solution

Righto, owners of the Medi8ter: How does it handle streaming video over the LAN from for example a NAS? I assume it has gigabit ethernet in the back?

It has 100mbit. Streaming of .AVI files (700MB and 1.4GB) is flawless over Samba. Apparently NFS is faster but I haven't tried it. I haven't tried larger content.

Could you maybe do me a favour and give a 4gb or so BR-rip a bash? It would be greatly appreciated.

I use an Xtreamer, which also only has a 100mbit jack and can stream a 46GB movie with no issues

Edit: And it's 1080[ Blue-Ray Rip

I can't say all but most of my media is full HD; I stream it with ease from Samba; never had a flicker or stutter.

The ONLY thing I have against the M8 is that fast forward and rewind doesn't work that well -- it works, but it is a bit sluggish.

Keep in mind that this is via direct Samba share, I have no hard drive in the M8, so everything is done via my LAN, and even with BD videos it still works brilliantly.

I have only had a few issues with some MKV's that uses a strange encoding; i.e. a few youtube videos and the like.

The other thing that I learned a bit later is that you will need a hard drive if you want to create playlists to play in the background while doing photos in the back or some such: So I would probably get one with a HDD, even if it's a small one ...

ps: I have seen the AppleTV; I have used the AppleTV; I love my iPhone --> But you literally can not compare the AppleTV to the M8: It is not the same device, it is not designed for the same features; and in South Africa, unless you are a real Apple Junkie, I would not even consider it.

AppleTV : Set Top Box
M8: Multi Media Center.

Test was successful. The source was a BDRip of 2012 in mkv format (filesize was 13.1GB). I watched the first 30 minutes and there were no pauses or stutters or delays; it was as if I was watching it from the internal drive.

Great! I really appreciate the effort.

TBH, will never play with media players any more. HT-PC the way to go.

Sorry - Just to stir -- Will never play with HT-PC again, embedded media players is the way to go ...

[grin]

Sorry - Had to.

I had this amazing PC setup; beautiful media case, looks like an amplifier with powder coated metal, etc, etc:

PC's are loud, they can crash, you have to pay extra for the operating system or spend hours fixing codex's.

With embedded media players you plug it in and start watching; it's quiet, it just works, the remote does it's job, it doesn't crash, etc, etc.

[As mentioned, just to stir, but anyway]

I agree... my MCPC was like a helicopter no matter what I did. I actually enjoy the simplicity of the embedded players, mine is the same size as one of my old portable hard drives ! If I want to take it to some one else's house I just unplug it and run. Then if some one else brings their drive to my house then I can just plug it directly in to my drive and copy what I want (or share).

I have had no probs with my HT-PC, lucky I dont really hear it. Also it uses onboard gfx, so no need to buy GPU. Loaded XBMC (completely free) and it plays everything. Also nice for surfing the web and youtube etc on the big screen...

I assume this info comes from the net somewhere (e.g. imdb.com or tv.com) ? If so, then I don't think so.
What it can do is display movie info from a file. But you have to put the file in the same dir as the movie.

That said, the mede8er firmware is constantly updated (unlike that waste-of-money know as mvix.) So if there is enough demand for a specific piece of funcitonality then the developers can provide it.
