Best Espresso machine?

Looking at taking my coffee to the next level and investing in a decent semi-automatic espresso machine. Not interested in fully automatic or capsule machines.

Any recommendations from coffee connoisseurs out there? My budget is around R10k excl burr grinder

Really interested in the Rancilio Silvia v5 or Breville BES870 (cant seem to source the better Breville models locally).

You on the right track by investing in a semi-automatic machine to take your coffee to the next level, but rather choose a machine that suits your needs in the long run, as it is can become a costly habit.

Firstly choose a machine depending on what type of coffee you drink the most (Espresso or milk based). There are three main types of machines to start, Single boilers, Heat Exchange and double boilers.

Different heat temperatures are required for the brewer (espresso) and steamer (milk froth), so if you just want it for espresso’s than a single boiler will be ok. If you plan on using it like most South Africans regularly for milk based cappuccinos and Latte’s than seriously consider a heat exchanger (HX) or Double Boiler.

At your price level, it will be very difficult to get anything past the single boiler. The Rancilio Silvia is a brilliant value single boiler machine, but lacks PID, and can be a challenge to get and maintain the correct temperatures for brewing and frothing for consistent coffee. Many add after market PID’s. I think these need to be imported though as I haven’t seen local suppliers. As others have pointed out E61 patent is the way to go, but doubt you will find anything anywhere close to your price level.

HX and Double boilers are much more expensive (R20k +), you could however, find a pre-owned closer to your price. Look at the Breville double boilers (920, 900 etc), which are decently priced and close to your budget, but may find it difficult to obtain locally.

Lastly I cannot stress the importance of a good burr grinder and fresh quality beans roasted and used within 2 weeks
