Can someone recommend the best internal HDD money can buy ?

Minimum 1TB.

You do not mention the form factor or interface type.

Why not get an ssd if money is not an issue?

There are faster options out there but they require an interface different to your standard sata ones.

yip sorry. Well I would opt for SATA.

The drive will be used mainly for backing up my software and TB's of family albums. My primary drive is already SSD.

Western Digital Gold drives or Seagate Enterprise/Constellation drives, both are at similar price points.

Ja was just about to say WD Gold or Seagate Constellation, should be ~R1500. Just make sure you order a sata one as I think some of them also come with sas interface.

TB's of family albums = priceless, or it will be to me anyway. Just get a normal Seagate Barracuda or the WD equivalent which ever brand you prefer, and sign up for a cloud backup service, something like Crashplan which is R600 odd per year.
If it's not off site, it's not backed up.

Yeah I take shots with a D300s in high quality and at times in RAW.

I have them currently backed up on an external drive and one HDD. So the new drive will be the 3rd one.

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions/recommendations

I have 3 external hard drives dedicated to backups, between the 3 they hold 2 copies of all my data from my Mac, PC and laptop. 1 of them lives in my safe, it gets taken out once a month to update the backup and then gets locked up again.
The other one is permanently connected to my iMac for the Timemachine backups and other mass storage. The third one is almost always connected to my PC for backing up and more mass storage.
Lastly I have Crashplan cloud backup for a third backup copy of all my data in case something goes horribly wrong.

Cloud backup is a grudge purchase, but if you are deep in the dwang example house gets cleaned out or even worse burns down with all your things, then the cloud is the only thing that will save you.

Not to derail thread. You can also look at Office 365 Home. You can install it for 5 users, and each use can have 1tb of one drive storage. Pretty sweet deal. R115/month or R1150 a year for 5tb cloud storage seeing as you have Terabytes of photos.

I believe you also have unlimited storage on Google photos, if you don't mind keeping them at max 16mp.

Backblaze argues that it is better to have more drives with better redundancy/version control/duplication or whatever than have expensive disks. Google Backblaze annual hdd reports to see their approach to large data storage.

Thanks for the info guys, ordered the WD Gold.

I do however need to know if this HDD will only work in a SATA3 port and not SATA2 ?

My graphics card was in the way and could only hook it up to a SATA2 port but it couldn't recognize the HDD. A bit lazy to go open up the case again ...

SATA is backwards compatible so you can run a SATA3 drive off SATA1&2 ports. Maybe check your bios settings to see if the port is not disabled etc?

You did order the sata and not sas dive btw as a sas drive will not wok on a sata port.

Yip its the SATA drive not anything else. It does say Datacenter though, hope that doesn't mean it wont work ?

HDD NOT SSD

Yeah if it is expressly for backup I'd prefer getting a fibre line and a couple gigs Google drive or the Microsoft or Apple equivalents. They'll do enterprise RAID behind the scenes too, virtually guarantees it as a backup.

My external drives wer starting to fail, so I decided to buy a 6TB Toshiba internal SATA drive (was on special with Takealot). Transferred all my backups from the externals to the new drive (losing quite a lot of stuff in the process as there were many file access errors on the externals)... A few weeks later, the 6tb started making loud chugging noises like a train and the access rate slowed down to almost a crawl. Eventually decided to return it... had to copy the contents back onto the externals (losing more data in the process), and then opted for the WD Purple 6TB range. Much quieter and so far has been quite reliable. It is the recommended drive for surveillance systems which have regular write events.

OK so being extremely rusty with installing hardware, I forgot that I needed to have windows first recognize the disk and then create the partition.

I first did as Ponder queried ( if the SATA port was enabled ) , then of course noticed that the HDD was connected to a port, then went into the windows management to do the necessary.

Thanks again guys !

For storing of photos, I really can't see you going wrong with 2 drives stored in different locations. I have all of mine on a HDD at work, and a duplicate of that drive at home. If either place burns down, no problem. Simple and cheap solution. It's easy to get tied up in 'which drive is the best'. The one that is backed up in a different location is the best one.
