Best Filter Coffee Machine

Bought one of these, useful as you can set a timer or clock so it start making coffee 5 minutes before you wake up. Biggest issue was the coffee ran through the filter to fast so was to weak when making a single cup (works well for 3+ people) or a full pot. Could have probably played around with filter and differnt coffess but making normal french press just works better for me.

Bought this Defy for R349. Seems to be a bargain. 2-year warranty!

I've been looking to get a small bean-to-cup or Nespresso for travelling but as we prefer long/large coffees I realised we don't actually need an espresso-focused solution, and that it would make sense to get a filter coffee machine which would be about as portable as a Nespresso while gaining the advantage of beans/grounds for freshness and to reduce costs.

I've done some basic research and it seems the main factors are drip vs shower and the ability to maintain water temperature.

Please let me know which filter coffee machine models are best, as well as any other tips or tricks. Also best filters?

There's a Bosch that looks decent. @Smiggles
Where are you traveling to that you can’t find coffee shops? Most airports and cities have?

If you want a sweet and awesome cup full of flavour and not bitter any of these with the correct filter will work amazing. Invest in a gooseneck kettle. Don't even need to bother with a scale.

Too small (sometimes need for 4 - 6 people) and a bit too much effort.

Woolworths canvas bag would work well.
When I used to drink coffee I'd take a French press on the road with me. The larger ones can easily accommodate 4-6 people and everywhere I stay provides a kettle in the room.

In the end it was travelling that caused me to give it up - $6 a day in the US for two months would have added up to more than R6k.

Not travelling to any airports or cities. This is for rustic cottages in the mountains

Also I make sure to seldom pay R35+ for a cappuccino…

French press coffee has never really done it for me. I have nice stainless steel ones that you can pre heat. I think logically filter/drip is better due to constant heat, slow brew, and smaller grind

Ended up getting the Platinum ‘Digital Coffee Maker’ from Checkers as I decided to get something cheap with a timer. Will return the Defy. Very easy to use, 1.8L capacity, has a slower ‘strong’ mode, and uses a U-shape filter instead of V-shape. Also saw a Platinum rechargeable burr grinder for cheaper than the same rebrands on Takealot, which works great albeit slowly, and which makes 30g of coffee grinds. Finding that the 30g of coffee with about 600ml of water makes great coffee and fills our 450ml double wall mugs to the top after adding milk. Happy!
