Just a quick read. To be honest guys I won't use any security product from MS. I do not trust them for one second. It's the same reason I don't use IE.

and that's a pretty unprofessional point of view to hold on why you won't use them. If you don't like MS or trust them... then why are you using Windows? It is a Microsoft product, didn't you know?

No it's not unprofessional it's years worth of battling with their products that have made me bitter towards them. I don't use their products by choice, for most customers I am actually moving them to open source infrastructure as far as services go. Unfortunately I am still forced to use their products in certain scenarios. The only product(s) they have that I like is MS Office (2007 up) and Windows 7, they have taken time an effort to get a pretty decent workstation operating system offering to market.

Don't really want to derail this topic with other fluff. Simply put I wouldn't trust their AV
 
Actually, the AV wasn't Microsoft's to start with. They bought the base from another company and developed it into their own product. MS does make some pretty amazing software they want to as well... and with MSE they have a winner. It has won a number of awards for their anti-virus.

But it's kinda hard to convince somebody who won't even give it a try. You can't argue against closed mindedness.

What is the exact reason that forces you to use Windows and not Linux or OSX etc. ? It has to be something really important considering you obvious dislike of MS products. Maybe we can help you find an alternative and you can ditch MS for good.

I do lots of documentation/proposals/visio's for client's - I can wine office and run a Linux desktop but it isn't reliable (I have no issues with MS Office, it is arguably the best out there even considering it's closed sourced origins and lack of compatibility interoperability with other office suites) so no go. Corporate policy also states all workstations and laptops must be Windows based. With the exception of my lonely game machine in the corner gathering dust and my work laptop all my other machines are running linux (Ubuntu and OpenSuSE for testing) and some vm's with FreeBSD, CentOS, Asterisk, SLES and then also a few appliances that use for labbing new solutions).

Also we have to be running on our own laptops the software that we propose clients use to inspire confidence. If we sell ESET I run that etc... our standard spec for corporate machines at this point is win 7 pro with MS Office 2010.

and we have now managed to completely hijack this man's thread - sorry dude
 
Makes sense. You HAVE to use MS Products. If it was purely private and not business, then you would have left MS for dust then.

Regarding MSE, I wish it had the capability to allow offline update servers. It would be nice to have the updates coming through the net onto my media center and then the other PC's would update from that PC. I wanted to buy NOD32 business to do this but they force you to buy 5 licences as a minimum.
 
I used AVG for a few years and thought it was alright, until I switched to Avira which I find to be much better. Low on resources, not many false positives - just a better piece of software. We had a machine come in last week with Microsoft Security Essentials installed, and it was up to date, yet the machine was riddled with viruses and malware, so MSE doesn't get my vote.

Everyone will have their own opinion though.
