i'm looking for a decent mail server software that is free, else any suggestions for a decent pay one except ms exchange :)

For open source look at Zimbra. For paid Kerio is quite nice and has a few exchange features.

We have been using james apache mail for the past 3 years, but recently we have been having issues with mail headers, busy moving our server to h-mail

hMailServer is a free e-mail server for Microsoft Windows. It's used by Internet service providers, companies, governments, schools and enthusiasts in all parts of the world.

It supports the common e-mail protocols (IMAP, SMTP and POP3) and can easily be integrated with many existing web mail systems. It has flexible score-based spam protection and can attach to your virus scanner to scan all incoming and outgoing email.

  • POP3, SMTP, IMAP
  • Virtual domains
  • Built-in backup
  • SSL encryption
  • Anti-spam
  • Anti-virus
  • Scripting
  • Server-side rules
  • Multilingual
  • Routing
  • MX backup
  • Multihoming
  • SQL backend
  • Web administration

Paid for I would go for MailDaemon from AltN technologies - depending on the size of your organization might get a little steep though
