Hi there, I am a 35 year old female with no dependents. I have Discovery hospital plan medical aid and want to get gap cover. I have been researching and so far the finalists are:
Stratum
Zestlife
Sanlam
Sanlam is the most reasonably priced of those ones. I've not heard great things about Discovery gap cover. Any other ideas or suggestions of gap cover would be appreciated. (or of these ones listed who has had good/bad experiences?)

Thanks!

I was with stratum for a number of years and claimed 4 times, no issues.

My wife's employer gives us Sanlam and I have used them twice, also no issues.

Same process with either really, fill out a form and submit the relevant documentation from medical aid, hospital, specialists and that's it.

Discovery gap is a rip off, only bonus with them is they probably handle all the 'paperwork' for you.

Also with Sanlam, 1 or 2 claims went seamlessly.
Helped my dad recently with a gap claim at Admedgap, they took much longer and were useless. I was with them some time ago and they were ok then, seems to have gone downhill since.

I have Discovery Classic Comprehensive and was told by their broker NOT to take Discovery Gap. She recommended Zestlife, which I have but tried to claim twice and been refused twice because:

NB: Zestlife Gap ONLY covers in-hospital procedures and only if your medical aid has paid something towards it. So if you have a great dentist and opt for a R70k mouth full of gorgeous crowns Gap will NOT pay towards it.

I don't know about other gap schemes.

How do the prices compare for the ones you listed here ?

Gap is only for in hospital procedures

I am quite happy with Zestlife. My hospital plan is with Bonitas who are reasonable for their payments

The last 4 hospital procedures were, with Zestlife paying the residual amount, all refunded in full

That is what I would have expected

I'm with Stratum Executive Plan iirc on Discovery Smart Plan Classic.
It's cheaper than the cheapest all-hospital hospital plan and doesn't have an MSA. However, you still get R600 p.a. for OTC medicine, R2700 p.a. for prescribed medicine and doctors visits. The gap cover then of course bumps up the % of the medical aid rate you pay, but also covers the co-payment for non-network hospital admission once a year.

Stratum has been good, but I remember having too fill in too many forms and stuff to my liking to claim, but I suppose it was all necessary information. They give you 6 months to claim iirc and paid promptly.

That’s normal for Gap cover, some of them do offer some additional out of hospital cover that’s independent of what your Medical aid covers but the majority of the cover just boosts what your existing medical aid covers.

Sirago is another one, their Ultimate cover also covers emergency room visits, MRI scans and a few other bits.

How do the prices compare for the ones you listed here ?
Basic Zestlife with 300% cover and pays 3 times medical aid rates: R333
Sanlam and pays 5 times medical aid rate: R233
Stratum Elite cover with 500% cover: R376

Sanlam is cheapest but I am suspicious. I see that Stratum seems the best as per what people have told me

Have you downloaded their policy spec sheets and compared them?
Some companies just offer better value for whatever reason, what you pay is not always reflective of what you get and that can go either way.

Thank you so much everyone for your advice - it is much appreciated. I think Stratum seems the best in terms of cost and my needs.
