Can anyone recommend a decent in-car GPS navigator that will not beak the bank?
My wife's trusty TomTom just died on her. She is constantly on the road, doing property valuations.
Most of the time it is to spots in GP I didn't even know existed (there's a suburb called Modder?)

I use Google Maps myself, but she prefers a dedicated unit, and her Ecosport does not come with a onboard system.
A plus would be if it doubles as a trip logger.

You can go for the well known brands like TomTom or Garmin.
The TomTom Start 52 around R2199, the touch screen is a bit dimwitted.
There are also some good Garmin devises like the Garmin Drive 60LM for around R2499(Like the TomTom you need to connect your phone via bluetooth for traffic updates)

But if you are willing to take a little bit of a risk try out Wish.com

If she travels often during peak hours then I would suggest that she get a smartphone that stays permanently in the car as a dedicated unit. The Garmin and the TomTom do not have traffic information. Use Waze for navigation. The monthly cost of the data is offset by the fuel saving. Over time the fuel saving will also cover the cost of the phone.

You can't ask for 'best' and then later stipulate you also want a cheap one (which is all you'll get in the R2000 price range).

Trust me on this: I invested into a TomTom Go 5000 for R4 500 over two years ago and it's still serving me well. You can now get the newer model, the 5100, for 'only' R4 200: https://www.makro.co.za/electronics-and-gaming/tomtom-go-5100-303373EA

Why so much? Your wife will thank you. It has a better, larger and more responsive screen. It also has a built-in sim card, so it connects to TomTom's live traffic service (which is the most accurate system in South Africa) with no need for your wife to link it to her phone or worry about data. It has lifetime map updates and traffic.

As a road warrior, you won't need any more reasons. If it's a critical tool for your wife's job (and it sounds like it is) then don't skimp on it. R2 000 'saved' won't be a saving the moment your wife misses a key appointment because she's stuck in a traffic jam her unconnected entry-level GPS didn't warn her about.
