I apologise in advance for asking a question to which the answer is most probably already available on this forum, but I could not find it.

I am getting an iPad 2 3G over the weekend and I need to decide on the best 3G bundle. I have WiFi and unlimited data at home, so the 3G would only be for travelling and that is mostly to the major centres (CT, Joh'burg, PE, EL, Durban) and once in a blue moon to Europe. I suspect that my total 3G data use would be quite low (email and whatever data the iPad needs for some apps to run) and I would not like to lose unused data every 60 days, so I am gravitating to the Cell-C 365 day bundles.

Please help. Any advice will be helpful.

In my 1st month I used allmost 2gig of 3G data on my iPad 2 (I have a 2.3gig data contract on mine)

I aslo have wifi at home with a 50gig cap so the 2 gig was used at work, travelling etc. I must however admit that I did spend some time on youtube and downloaded app updates via 3G etc so I'm sure you can get away with less data.

I'm however happy with my 2.3gig on it as I use it as I like without to much worrying about out of bundle charges.

I dont have an ipad, but i think the Cell C 365 day bundle would be good, given that you have wifi at home, and for what to describe you want to use it for/

Even one of the Cell C bundles for 12 months could work - not sure whats the price difference between the bundles.

I'm also getting my iPad this weekend, gonna get the 24 gig R999 simdata option from cell c...I'm also gonna use it mainly for entertainment not much on the move and I've got 7mb/s line at home might be overkill but for a grand I won't have to worry about data for 12 months... Bargain in my books

8Ta's bundle @

R200 per 10GB is decent subject to coverage wherever you travel most often... , altho ....the places im at often generally have wifi....

so think im gonna check that cell c deal too...

I was initially considering the Cell C 365 day 3GB bundle, but your post has given me some perspective. 3GB for 400 bucks or 24GB for 1000. I doubt that I would ever use more than 2GB per month and if the CPA works as advertised, Cell C would not be able to let your unused data expire in any case.

Thanks for all the other answers. I see no-one promoting Vodacom or MTN bundles?

I got the cell c 24 gig prepaid for R999 and R134 for a mini data system and so far it covers all my needs.
Just a heads up, apple has placed a 20meg download limit on 3G connection, so if you planning on d/ling anything bigger than 20megs from the itunes store, it won't let you until you hook up your ipad to a wifi connection.
It doesn't affect the app store or youtube. But if you planning to use up what is left over of your 3g account by downloading podcasts or series you out of luck.

that 999 for 24gigs @ 42/gig. 1999 for 60gig @ 33/gig. best prepaid I reckon, my reception is always 3g+, much better than Mtn actually. seriously thinking about the 999

OK...So today i went into cell c and bought the 3gig deal for 365 days. Reason was i have wifi at home and at work, only time i need is when i am out of the office or home and also when no electricity (and yes in sa, thats a strong possibility). So far i pick up great signal and works very well from my point. Well worth it for 365 days if u wifi area most of the time. I wont download any apps or music, but i may use for skype when out on holiday but thats it and i feel 3 gig for me is worth it. But def cell c is good anyway you choose.

Thanks for all the replies. Definitely 24gig 12 month deal for me. I'll let you know if I had any hassles.

I promised to let you know of hassles - well, here goes! Cell C in Cape Town (well Somerset West and Stellenbosch) seem a bit confused about these data bundles. They are "out of stock". I confirmed that they have micro sims, but they cannot give me one, because they do not have the data bundles to sell.

I will be in Durban tomorrow, so I'll give it another try there ...........

Must say the iPad is a data hungry little device. I am looking at about 3+ GB per month... Will try to get a data product with at least 2GB of data.. And not that fake free data of Vodacom...

Success at last! Thanks to the Cell C boys in the Gateway Mall in Umhlanga, who sorted me out in a few minutes. I see the price of these bundles are about to increase by about 50% ..............

ok so got the Cell C 24G @ 999 this weekend and am really impressed with it , great speeed in the areas i am often in (sandton/randburg/radiokop) when not on WIFI(work/home)

really an impressive bundle :)

Anyone making use of the IPad specific bundles from 8ta. 1GB for R160 that doesn't expire seems fair for low usage. Also roams outside 8ta network, so no coverage issues. What are your thoughts?

+1

Works great, with good speed

Also went for the Cell C 3 Gig bundle. Works well with good speed and coverage. 8ta process for IPad was infuriating. Incompetent sales people & Technical support. Turns out that you must purchase the micro-sim from the iStore, of course you only find this out two days after struggling to connect and register.
