Best IS 10meg uncapped account - Help with decision

Hi Guys.

With the recent Axxess/Afrihost MTN network change, I've had non stop issues with connectivity, and also shaping and throttling. I've cancelled my 10meg uncapped account with them, ending end of January, and would like to hear from the MYBB forum who they would recommend for 10 meg uncapped using the IS backbone? I've heard of Plugg being very good (IS own ISP), but they are over R1k per month for 10 meg uncapped. Any other ISP's?

With plugg you get two connections. Sometimes I can get up to 10mbps on even one connection (4mbps account). Generally you can get 10mbps on two connections. Pretty good deal, but they are not as consistent during the day as Mweb is.
 
I also need to add that I do between 300-400 gigs per month, I have a household full of techie family, with kids streaming netflix on their pads, movies, spotify....etc. So I cannot stand being throttled, and netflix / hulu keep in 'caching'

I think the janitor said that if you share a 10meg account, the bandwidth is contested, so if one line is idle then the other line will get the full 10meg.

That account when run on a 10Meg line should actually get you about 7Megs. The account stays at 6/7megs 24/7.

I'm on the 4Meg account on a 6Meg line and regularly get over 5Megs.
 
Why are people recommending 6 meg accounts to a person who clearly stated they want a 10 meg account and going by the usage needs one ?

I also need to add that I do between 300-400 gigs per month, I have a household full of techie family, with kids streaming netflix on their pads, movies, spotify....etc. So I cannot stand being throttled, and netflix / hulu keep in 'caching'

DaBump when a reseller has lower prices you will tend to see the restrictions that come with it so that the lower price can actually be maintained. Plugg being IS's own ISP will be less likely to cripple themselves if you can use that wording than a reseller would. I am not a fan of the IS network in general but if you're going IS unfortunately that will end up being your bet option.

The only option I see is moving off the IS backbone onto one I consider superior being MWebs but thats personal preference and I dont know your reasons for the IS backbone, if there isn't a specific one try getting a trial account from web and seeing if you like it.

I know this doesnt answer your wishes of a cheap 10mbit uncapped on IS with good performance but hopefully it will make you avoid a bad choice.


EDIT: When people state their "Constant Speed" find out what it is, remember streaming is one connection and not as high priority as browsing so if a persons getting full speed on usenet find out what they get with a single connection not 2/10/20 as single is what will be important to you.

Openweb Gold accounts don't do any throttling at all, hence me recommending them.
 
My experience with OpenWeb gold was nothing but nightmares and having to switch accounts weekly over multiple backbones, either streaming, Usenet or gaming would suck. I tried them out for a few months but I really got tired of jumping between different accounts that worked fine for a week then started sucking.

I gave it time and patience but eventually I just got worn down.

I've been with them for over a year now without issues. You'll find many other forumites with the same experiences as me. Openweb Gold really is the best consumer uncapped account you can get.

Of course you will get a few horror stories. It happens with volume of any thing.

The awesome thing with Openweb as well is that you can actually get things done on weekends and public holidays. I wouldn't try any other ISP.

Hi KinsZA. Thank you for the reply. The reason why I've chosen the IS route, is that I've previously used ISP's (Afrihost and Axxess), latter for years, where I never had any issues. So it's the 'devil I know'. I find it very frustrating on the MTN network. I'm willing to pay up to R900 PM.

My sentiments exactly, was just waiting for someone braver than I to say this. Here, have a flamesuit.
 
I am not saying that everyone will experience this problem but I am saying myself and others have which you should take into account when making your decision and try to get trial accounts before making the decision.

I remember being given a test account from openweb while I was having problems and the test account worked out great, when I mentioned how this is how the internet should be I got told that it was a test account for the business class accounts.

I am going to say the thing I generally hate people saying but could you try and push that to 999 ? That will give you a chance to give MWeb's 10mbit account a go, I know they offer 7 day trials for 4mbits I am sure MwebGuy who has great forum presence a chance to maybe organise you a 10mbit trial. That R999 would give you hundreds of KB/s extra speed over choosing a lower speed account for the price of takeout from steers for two.

My history of ISP's was...

Axxess when they had the 192/4096 account (this was the first affordable uncapped). Then Afrihost for a few days (I found out about the throttling) also when they first came out, then Mweb for a few Months but their intial subscriber surge put a bit of a strain on the network since they offered great cheap uncapped so I moved to OpenWeb gold for perhaps 2 months, after that I went to WebAfrica's uncapped but the rolling quota and latency problems also got to me so after 2 months I went back to MWeb and have been happy with them since (They had upgraded their network and signups had stabilised).

Do MWEB also have the FUP and rolling window nonsense?
 
Every ISP has a usage policy to protect themselves from people who will download full speed 24/7 people may rage about that but they are very fair, I have not seen anyone who does under 300GB a month (On a 4mbit account) complain and many people do much more, it is more about how you use their network than what you do. I can be pretty sure that with a 10mbit account you will have much more flexibility than anyone else, after all you're paying for a lot more.

They dont like people trying to exploit their network by using shady means to get around any form of control they wish to put in place and I have not had to attempt this (eg I can quite happily use port 119 for pay for newsgroup services and get full speed unless there is heavy load which is rather rare).

I have never had to go "Damn I have to watch myself" with MWeb and I do use Netflix, I do download, I do game, I do stream music and Netflix wise on 4mbit line (so 3.4mbit speed) I can stream a 5.1 movie just fine with say 20s buffer at the beginning and I'll only hit HD generally on series halfway through so it looks like all I would need is a TINY bit more speed to get the max out of it (This is streaming netflix through xbox at 1920x1080 if it makes a difference).

Mweb voices that fact that they do not throttle very strongly, I have on the odd occasion had a bit of a Usenet shape in place where I dont get my max speed but I can only think of one or two instances of that and its a lower priority protocol than you would be using.


EDIT: I know how well I speak of them is how well other people will speak of their service provider if they are happy but I will state I have 0% brand loyalty, if a better ISP came out I would switch in a heartbeat, I have tried them all and MWeb is the ISP I've been with the longest.
