What is the best ISP for 30gig ADSL? I checked out axxxes but they kill your connection when you reach your cap. I thought I would go with imaginet coz they only kill your international traffic.

peerly?

well, yeah, with 30GB you cant really go wrong. But you will have to download like mad, cause soon it is all a thing of the past.

right now, best is Web africa, although i am not with them. the service is almost the same as axxess. my colleague/friend just ordered an account from axxess this morning and like not even 30 minutes later all has been activated. cool stuff, and from what i hear WA has the same levels of service.

If you download or plan to download 24/7 then 30GB will not enough, but it sure is a lot. should keep you happy till SA developes into a 3rd world country

ooh, no, not the wrong ISP, you must just use the MYADSL discount reference number thingy

Oi, dofie. Keep bumping into you. Thing is, as I said with Axxess. They just keel your connection if you reach your cap. That is not nice.

I *MIGHT* be getting my ADSL connection installed today. If I do, do I get a pro-rata account with any of the ISP's? Or should I just get the web-africa 30G account and try and download like crazy for the next 11 days?

:)

When you hit a cap and reconnect, your connection gets assigned to a separate "capped range" of IP addresses. Telkom's system then routes all your international traffic over a far slower/more highly contended link. Given the low amount of bandwidth allocated to this link, one cannot expect international traffic to function once you have hit your cap, though national remains unaffected.

Cool, then, in my opinion WA is the best bet by far

Just out of interest, and I am really, genuinely curious... What are you going to spend 30Gb of bandwidth on?? Every month? For that matter, could we get some feedback from people who already have 30Gb accounts? Would you mind sketching a bit of a picture for us on what you spend your 30Gb on every month? And if you actually ever hit your cap?

Hmm, this sounds like a trap. You are a undercover FBI agent, I have trust issues

one word:
easynews

ok, that is TECHNICALLY 2 words, but check them out. easynews.com. they are a front end to the usenet groups. $10 for 20GB of goods

get the latest eps of EVERYTHING on american tv the day after it was aired... i love TV, but only if its better than DSTV, and now i am in control of what i watch.

DUH!!! but we are not allowed to talk about illegal things here :P
<inuadible_whisper_mode = on>Smallville and Alias yes, and you can request shows that you missed. Its like pay per view, just the charges are VERY reasonable and the downloads are at your maximum line speed since it uses HTTP transfers, which we all know are NOT shaped by Telkom<inaudible_whisper_mode = off>

suffice to say: if its worth watching it will be on easynews.

hordes of anime as well, *cough* they have NO movies *cough*. basically just unbelievable amounts of stuff to watch. pr0n addicts should steer clear. you will DIE there.

You can call me Captain Copyright... ;)

No, what you do with you connection is your business, as far as I am concerned. I just suspect that a significant number of people use 30Gb of bandwidth for 'illegitimate' purposes, as defined by Telkom. Which means that Telkom can use the way you use your bandwidth to justify the caps, to justify the high pricing, and to justify shaping. While I believe you should not be told what you can and can't do with your connection, Telkom conveniently uses 'illegitimate' traffic as an excuse to do just that. Yes, they are self-serving, but you are probably allowing them to be by proving them right. You are allowing them to dictate legitimacy by abandoning your moral higher ground for a first look at the latest season of Smallville.

I was wondering if there were people out there who actually manage to use (all of) 30Gb of their caps without collecting any copyrighted material.

Juice: according to MANY statements made by Telkom, ADSL is perfect for downloading movies and stuff like that (dont think they used the word "stuff"), but series episodes are just like movies. we of course just watch these episodes and then delete them :P but if telkom says we can do it, then let the people do it :)

I'm not sure about that either and that is why I'm investigate false advertising in another thread. However, read this page of the article appearing in the IT Web printed magazine:

(page 1, for completeness: http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3160/page118im.jpg)

I quote:

"According to Telkom's ICASA submissions, those who abuse the ADSL service include gamers, online traders and user who download feature-length films."

(I read on-line traders as P2P users and not on-line financial stock traders.)

It seems a contradiction for them to say the service is perfect for those functions, but then state that people using those functions are abusers of the service.

yeah, i know what you mean :(

but still, downloading movies are kind of a waste, since its so much cooler in the cinema and the quality of the downloads really suck.

however, we have these friends in america who records episodes of our favourite series that we never see in this country, and we simply get it from them :) i am a series addict. if this is illegal then i will ask them to dub it onto a VHS for me, since they sell videorecorders for that purpose: to record stuff from TV.

Moklet = Contradiction specialists
Telkom: "It says so in the report! We rule!"
ICASA Chairperson: "Then lemme see it you silly GIT!"
Telkom: "Erm, what report? Dunno what you are on about."
