Hey all, our company is rolling out Linux in 150 branches and we are looking to train our current staff helpdesk contingent in Linux, at least enough to handle 1st and 2nd tier calls. We are going to be using Ubuntu Linux and I have been reading about the Ubuntu Certified Professional cert. The instructor led training takes 5 days? My MCSE took 6 months of brow bashing, could this be real? And is there perhaps a software agnostic (Linux) certification that will stand my guys in good or better stead in the general Linux arena in the future?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

ciao

The LPI Certifications are distribution agnostic. LPIC-1 or maybe the Linux Essentials might be a good start for your helpdesk guys.

EDIT: Incidently, if you're able to start a thread to share any information about your project, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who would be interested to hear about it.

I just wanna say.

This is awesome. Well done. About time your company upgraded to Linux :D

I agree. LPIC-1 would be a very good start. For the more technical/advanced guys, LPIC-2 is also very good once they have done LPIC-1. Try Openbyte Training, I think they offer both.

LPI is the best bet because it teaches you about LINUX not about Red Hat / Ubuntu / Debian / Insertflavourhere.

Why is people pushing Red Hat Linux on the OP. They are going to use Ubuntu and Debian differs a little from Red hat/Fedora.
I'm a huge fan of Red hat and Fedora, don't get me wrong, but if you wanna go Ubuntu, rather go the LPI way or anything that's more Debian or generic.

Thanks guys, great replies, all of these. Looks like CompTia Linux+ is the same exam path as LPI exams. Plus once passed one can request LPI certification, and then apply for other versions as well. Ubuntu is the version being talked about right now but watch this space, anything could happen...

Will definitely keep you all posted on how it turns out!

PS Their prices are also very good ;)
