Very good response Loosecannon, since this is currently a source of your bread and butter, and have a family to feed, some things must be paid for, giving a solution to SOHO networks freely, and charging you're corporate clients is the only way to make it work, otherwise, you get no cash, and they get no updates, in the end, it works for both parties!

I used to be hardened on the 'freely available open source' concept, but I became rather sympathetic on this issue since I came across the homepage of LRP, the Linux Router Project or better known now as LRIP, this guy did something similiar to the cannonball, but it sounds a little less feature rich.

He had to disband all his clients because he was purely running on a donation basis.
LooseCannon, provide what you can, but look out for your own needs.

BlobNow, I'm a bit late in my reply. But I'll shoot anyways. If you feel like trying out more things, there's another firewall distro, IP=COP (www.ipcop.org) that I believe was a fork of the smoothwall code. It's currently in 1.3, 1.4 will be released in the next few weeks. It includes a transparent proxy and good replying, and works really well on old hardware (have 25 clients running of a Pentium with 40mb ram and adsl).

If you're feeling more adventurous, you can have a look at Astaro Security Linux. This is a more heavyweight firewall based on SUSE. It offeres quite a wide range of services, like mail virus/spam scanning, content filtering, various proxies and really good reporting. It's a commercial product, but they do have a free version available with limited functionality. I've only worked with the full commercial version, so I don't know the differences offhand. You can look at www.astro.com

Just some extra info incase you're intereste.

/me is off to download smoothwall - haven't looked at it in ages...

Txs koffie junkie ... I'm basically going to be running the linux box on a Celeron 466 with 256Mb mem ... using the Billion 711C2 modem with and let smoothwall do all the work (dialing/firewall, etc .. )

I'm not looking for really rich environment I'm just looking for a Good firewall which can handle the bridged ADSL router and is easy to maintain ...

I'm currently running Sysgate Free FWall on XP and it seems to be working well as I see about 5-10 hack attempts every day ... I however needed that machine for other stuff (Oracle) and I have 2 spare Celerons lying about so I thought I'd use them ...

Having said that I'm goin to go and D/L opcop and have a look at it .. txs [:)]

Cel 466 with 256mb is some serious hardware for a firewall :-)

Do enable your web proxy in Smoothwall - it will save you a bunch of bandwidth....
