Best Linux distributions for an old laptop

For an old 64-bit system I will go with Manjaro XFCE, Arch is also a good option. Then there is Elementary, but it has become the "Apple" of Linux distribution or so to speak. Manjaro is what I use.
 
Puppy Linux, Bodhi and Zorin... Interesting.
TinyCore linux is just for playing around. Not worth installing.
Linux Mint, any Debian distro with the XFCE wm should work.
Where's MATE?

You don't need no distro hopping or special light distro. Just build your own in 30 mins. Install a Debian weekly build net install image, then choose your DE of choice on prompt. Minimal bloat, low resources and fast. For example, Debian netinst + XFCE = 400mb of Ram. Slap on an xfce theme, whisker menu and a little customization and Bob's your uncle.

Fast and responsive even on old hardware and of course good to look at.

depends what your version of an old laptop is ? When i think old and linux , something like a 486DX running slackware , where you boot the OS off a floppy disk.Back in the day i ran a test server with apache , bind , ftp , etc and it was fine.Obviously you needed to recompile the kernel but it still ran fine.
