Scientific Linux SL6 (based on Fedora 12) is quite nice. https://www.scientificlinux.org/
Stable and fast. Live CD available. I might switch to it as my main distro if I dislike the fisher-price
toy type setup of Gnome 3 and Unity as much as I think I might. Maybe the Mint devs. will come up
with some good mods of their own. Early days yet.

This is where Ubuntu and Fedora are way ahead of most distros.

Ubuntu support and documentation is really bad. The forums are full of noobs flooding the place with millions of irrelevant posts. Trying to find a solution in there is hell.

A distro like Arch or Debian etc though has proper documentation and much better forums.

I have had no issues using the Ubuntu forums, however, it is true that there are a ton of irrelevant posts there of noobs venting because they don't get a reply in 2 seconds to their post, which has already been answered previously and would have been found if they had bothered to search the forums/used Google. Usually I search the Ubuntu forums first, if no luck there, then go to Google. Funny thing is, have found answers in the Ubuntu forums via Google, but not with the forum's search function.

Haven't really used any other distro, except for Mint, but found solutions there the same way as for Ubuntu, so yeah.

I personally find the Ubuntu support better than any linux distro. Google almost always has a clear step-by-step how-to for Ubuntu. I sometimes get that with other distro`s, but not as much as Ubuntu.

I agree with the documentation part, but the forums is another issue. If you are a newbie and try and ask something basic/elementary on Arch Forums you are more than likely never going to get an answer, they expect users who use Arch to have a certain understanding of Linux or at least have gone through the trouble of reading the very well maintained WIKI.

That said, 90% of all my queries have been resolved by the WIKI, so it is just fair that you search there and on Google before posting something in the Arch, Gentoo, Slackware (similar distros) forums.

One of the easiest with the most support available is Ubuntu, if your having strange problems then it's probably a good idea to get to know linux in more detail, that way you will have a better understanding of what your doing and could probably sort out those niggles. I'd recommend installing and learning Gentoo Linux if you are going to run some VM's, it will get you far.

That or the time spent watching stuff compiling will lead him to suicide.

LOL, snap! You also had that issue? :D I gave up after waiting 2 hours.... I was like... fk this...

A normal install makes me impatient... I dont have the time... a Gentoo install makes the Dali Lama cry.

I actually got a fully working desktop env. after three tries only to bork it completely a week later so I also adopted the "fk this" attitude :D

Also used Sabayon for a few releases and it was a great Gentoo based distro.

while i like gentoo, the fact that even with an i7 it still takes a significantly longer time to do updates is a bit crap. especially when i can feel no discernable difference compared to debian and arch after optimizing.
