Hello ladies and gentlemen

Can anyone recommend the best (read: easiest :p) distro to install on my pc that I can use as a server. It must have a proxy as well as ssh for tunneling and I also want to be able to shape and prioritize certain specific ports.

I already know I'm probably gonna end up getting a server type of distro, but which one would you recommend?

Preferably 64-bit and with all the above stuff already on it.

Thanks a million in advance.

PS: my second hard drive on the pc right now is encrypted using truecrypt, will I be able to continue using it encrypted on linux?

You could try either IPCop or Squid, these are awesome little distro's for doing the above.

Squid is just the proxy software, not a distribution in and of itself. I would recommend IPCop or Untangle.

Thanks for the info, I already tried to use ubuntu server 9.10 since it was already lying around at a friends house so that I wouldn't have to download it :)

I would however like to ask something about squid.

I've finally got it running, with ncsa authentication as well. But I want to limit certain users to certain times of the day, is this possible?

This is the relevant lines from squid.conf so far that I have for one user:

acl ncsa_users proxy_auth REQUIRED
acl no_usage MTWHF 08:00-20:00

http_access allow ncsa_users
http_access deny ncsa_users no_usage

So now this is for one user, but how to I modify it for 2 or 3 users?

I dont see the connection between ncsa_users and the /etc/squid/passwd file

Is ncsa_users a group?

I've tried googling for this but all I find is how to configure one "group" of users.

It is possible. I would recommend that you install Webmin, it makes the Squid configuration a lot easier.

hmmm, does webmin have a package?

I tried apt-get install webmin but I get a that message saying: this package could not be found but was referred to by another package or something along those lines. Am I using the right package name?

I would recommend pfSense. It is more feature rich than IPcop and I prefer it.

Its based on FreeBSD and is very stable. For the proxy part you can install Squid from a package with a couple of clicks. Traffic prioritization is built in to the base system.

:D

You will have to download it off the website, also this guide should be helpful.
