Hi everyone, so my partners phone appears to be giving up the ghost and I'm looking at getting her a new one, however, I am really not updated as to what the best android smartphones around the R10 - R15k range are.

She currently has a Samsung A73, main problem is it's scratched to bits and doesn't really have support for some of the newer tech, eSim, wireless charging etc. and the 128 gig storage has also filled up (she has 50k + pictures and videos at this point)

No gaming apart from a crossword game so this isn't really a consideration, main features I'm looking for are big screen, brilliant camera (I've been told that this is all she cares about) and decent value for money.

I've seen the Samsung S23 FE 256 gig is currently on special for R10k cash, would this be a good buy? And what are the best alternatives?

The S23FE is a pretty decent phone for that price, my wife has had hers for almost a year.

The S23 FE looks like the best choice considering your requirements for storage, camera quality, and future-proofing with new technologies like eSIM and wireless charging.

Lol if she would use an iPhone I'd probably get her one, she utterly despises the Apple ecosystem, I've had the 12 pro max almost 4 years now and she won't touch it.. But yea she want's android so happy wife = happy life.

Thanks everyone, seems like I'll be going for the S23 FE

"she want's android"....no wonder you married her, she's definitely a keeper 😄

Its a pity. You can get brand new sealed iPhone 13 with full iStore warrantee for R10.5k

The displays on the Samsung S line are better than Apple's. And the display is what you look at on your phone. So you want a good OLED screen.

Secondly benchmark differences mean nothing for usual use. Unless you want to play Genshin Impact at 120fps at highest settings and on a small phone screen it won't look better than standard settings at 60fps, I don't see what the scores are about.

You'll also get more RAM with these phones than with a basic iPhone and two physical sim slots as well.

iPhone 13 launch Sep 2021 R17 300
On average they sell secondhand now for between R8k and R9.5K for the base 128gb model

Samsung S21 launch Jan 2021 at R18k
On average secondhand price R3,5k to R4K

That should tell you all you need to know about quality, longevity etc.

No. That tells you about brand perception and resulting demand. Apple products are hyped up. That does not tell you anything about longetivity, quality etc.

I know this may be hard for some people to figure out but what's popular need not reflect actual longetivity and build quality. Kids tend to be dumb, do you really want to go by what kids like?

I'll also add that Samsungs often sell new at big discounts, for example the S24 Ultra sold for R23K at launch, so often you're also starting at a lower price point than Apple. Here however we have a value phone and that one goes for R10K which is a bargain.

Plus the S23FE beats the iPhone 14 in a few benchmarks and smokes the 13 in some benchmarks. Seems that the most advanced cpu on the apple may smoke the competition but not when in the device?
