Grinding is a term used in video gaming to describe the process of engaging in repetitive and/or non-entertaining gameplay in order to gain access to other features within the game

As for my best (in general, not just free) MMO, Runes of Magic - I dunno what you guys mean by childish but I find this game very mature, and very fun to play. The community is also very friendly. It can be downloaded on Local only cap http://gaming.do.co.za/downloads/153/pc/runes_of_magic_/Runes_of_Magic_Client.rar

I'm just being safe. WoW expects you to download huuuuge service packs, and to purchase expansion packs, and to run in unshaped bandwidth.
Expansion packs doesn't require an increase in subscription price, just an once-off payment.

As for patches and bandwidth, the same could be said about any mmorpg, free or not.

Once off payment on "expansion" = more money spent on the game = increase in yearly cost = increase in per month cost if averaged.
What I don't get about WoW is that you are paying for what is called a "subscription", which is touted by Blizzard to include the ever changing and growing World of Warcraft, but, when the game grows (i.e. An expansion), you are expected to pay more. So, in fact, all the subscription s paying for is ... erm ... erm ... admins and bandwidth, and not the ever changing and growing World of Warcraft.

Deceit.

You have to remember the upkeep of the servers, the incredible internet lines they must have. They gotta support over 10 million people, gonna take alot of cash. Expansion = more content = more people flocking to that place = more chance of server crashing, Therefore to keep maintenance up costs go up. The cycle of business :/

That holds true for any game or expansion you buy, so it's not a good argument.

I would think that the money from the selling of expansions would go to the development of new games, expansions and bug-fixing. The subscription money would go to the upkeep of the servers, paying the admins and GM's, and so on. Similar, but still two different things.

And I forgot why we are arguing.

As for the best free MMORPG, i would vote for Guild Wars. Just to answer the original poster

I got the perfect suggestion for people looking for a Free-2-play MMORPG and are restricted with internet Bandwidth.

Go check out Perfect World, its a beautiful game from what I've played so far,the graphics are truly top class.I have not played past lvl 7 but it was engaging enough, until i returned to playing Warhammer again.

Now for the best part, its on the cover disk of the PC FOrmat Magazine(SA version obviously) this month.

Enjoy.

Personally I think the best MMO is "EVE-ONLINE" it has a monthly subscription but you don't pay for the software and expansions are free.

I wouldn't say EVE is a RPG but it is an MMO.

I was waiting for someone to say EVE-Online. I say EVE too when I have time to play it. Only good if you're a team/group player. If you prefer solo then you'll get very lonely and hate it

Very true nothing like a fleet of 250 vs 250 or more :)

The best completely free MMORPG would be Runes of Magic in my opinion. They've still got some things to work out, but so far it has provided the closest to pay-to-play quality I've seen a free-to-play MMORPG provide.

Free Realms, which is a new MMORPG developed by Sony Online Entertainment launches next week. You may want to give that a try. It's geared towards a younger audience, but from closed beta testing it I've had a lot of fun.

Of course, if you can fork over a little bit of cash for Guild Wars - it has no monthly fees. It just celebrated its 6 millionth account activated, so clearly I'm not the only one who is a huge fan of it ;)

I used to play Dungeons and Dragons online like 45-50 hours a week. Loed it. Just sucks that the number of people are rather small :(

Great game, just became very unbalanced of late.
