What would be the best free mmorpg that is being played at the moment?

outside its been going for pretty long time, though i wouldn't say solid though.

I'd suggest Requiem - best free MMORPG I've ever played. Was actually one where I whipped out money for a premium subscription and a mount and silly costume :) Been a while since I've last played it though, but after level 40 it becomes pretty difficult to level quest-wise. Like 99% of all free MMORPGs (and 80% of all paid-for MMORPGs) it's a glorified grindfest. What makes it attractive is the gore, pure physx splatter and sexy characters :)

Runes of Magic was (likely still is).... pathetic... in my opinion. It's graphically hideous... and... just feels "childish."

There's Shin Megami Tensei Online - it's mildly entertaining with a fair amount of social aspects which deter from the grinding, also pets and demons - which is fun. Also has a fair attempt at a story, but not terribly worth the time.

Umm... There's Atlantica Online. It has a very JRPG-like combat system where you enter a combat zone each time you run into a visible mob. You have your own sort of "party" with NPCs you hire and other players can join in to help you... It's pretty well thought out and the story isn't terrible. But the load, attack one-by-one-by-one-by-one kind of thing gets boring... fast.

There are a few others... But they're really not even worth mentioning. In all honesty, if you're not willing (or capable) of paying for a monthly subscription, get your hands on GuildWars - it's a once-off payment (expansions notwithstanding) and it's a fairly good game that'll keep you occupied for quite a while.

Thank you Lyanthrope, very interesting.

I have to agree with you about Runes of Magic, I've been playing it on and off now for 4 months, and I could not really be bothered to take it seriously. I do enjoy teaming up with noobs and helping them out. Helping noobs is more interesting than playing the game .

I'll give Requiem a try instead, is there a local download available?
And, I forgot about GirlyWars ... I may look at hopping on that bandwagon.

@ihsaan, if you can afford R450 a month, World of Warcraft is undoubtedly the winner, hands down in every aspect, but it's like DSTV in that you have to keep on paying and paying and paying ...

Why R450 a month. WoW subscription costs about R175 (R350 for a two month gamecard). Unless you add internet costs, but then you pay for an free mmorpg as well.

well Guild Wars would take it if its just a monthly fee you are not willing to pay.

Also the complete disc set is around R300 so its also not hellishly expensive.

I'd second on Guild Wars too. It's the best MMO experience you'll get for a game without a monthly fee.

WoW (Scuze the pun), ... err nm, I did not see Endevs reply ... :p

Me walks in and recommends 9Dragons... (as long as you start on Bardo (european)) sever.

Me walk out and go back to grinding.. LOL

Edited: It's also free, but they have a item shop and premium packages

Requiem suffers from (bad + ugly) level design. Game has no atmosphere. Even WoW looks ten times better. The characters and mosters look good though.

Oh yeah Guild Wars is the best/most popular f2p MMorpg in the world atm. If you don't like Guild Wars then you skrewed in the f2p department.

I'm just being safe. WoW expects you to download huuuuge service packs, and to purchase expansion packs, and to run in unshaped bandwidth.
