Was wondering where to invest approximately R1 million.

Property tenanted after levies, rates and taxes doesnt seem to be a very good investment

Franchise?

Any Share Portfolios?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions

Personally looking at a new development (should pay off in the long run).

Bank savings account in South Africa is a no go.

Retail bonds also not attractive

Other thought I have is US based Vanguard Dividend ETF

You should really be looking for the highest Sharpe ratio.

COVID tenders or power ship related tenders

OP, it is weekend. When the trolls come home. Doubt you'll get some good advice.

Anyways, I think there already a couple of threads on this with some options. Probably something off shore. ZAR sucks.

I hate it when people ask this question but they never say how old they are, how long they intend to invest/save it etc etc.

If you're still 10-15 years from retirement and don't mind high risk, recent history would suggest shoving it all into some kind of world index tracking fund. If you are intending on using it in SA then use a feeder fund so that you hedge the Rand but don't incur currency conversion fees.

Do you want monthly income or asset growth?

Do you even live or plan to live in SA?

If you are a gambling man - Montecasino or crypto.

as a rule of thumb, returns on property only works with leveraging- never use your own money

but if it was my cash, I would spend 50k on gold bullion and 20k on silver and then figure out what to do with the rest of the balance

Investments > Property and the last year proved this with majority of wealth generated being in investment. See SA report on this.

But notice the speculative assets? Ie NFT, CC etc. this is because the dollar debasement is becoming obvious. You can’t print in excess of a 1/3 your currency without some repercussions from inflation to interest or face hyper inflation. But it’s the reserve.. yes, till it’s not.

Why I mention this? Longer term it would be wise to have a few paid off assets in your portfolio for when the dollar is kicked out as the reserve. Balancing this with fixed interest debt means that when things go hyper you sell some assets to pay off remaining debt at way lower cost.

Presently this looks on track for end of this decade if not sooner which is why there is a push into CC for fiat eg digital yuan which is also tied into swift. Change is coming..

I am sitting with this same issue and have concluded that R1mZAR isn't really of much interest to a good adviser - I think they are busy advising clients regularly dropping in R10m to R100m a time. As noted above your age and risk profile is important; if it is your only R1m you sure do not want to risk it.

My current feelings. Find a structured product that will secure say 90% of your investment but offer an upside as high as it goes; say Eurostox or whatever. These are fixed term as far as I know and have a minmium investment around R500k. If you like some risk maybe a managed portfolio although most need R1,5m or more but Anchor have an entry at R200 000 minimum. Don't know if they are good though - I am tempted.

Straight "unit trusts"; MiPlan has done well for me - pity I have only peanuts there.

Then maybe RSA bonds; also fixed term but you will do a few percent better than the bank.

My sense is that currently the SA stocks are being talked up and pumped so there will be some JSE equity growth but this is risky stuff; watch like a hawk and be ready to sell. Other investment threads on MyBB have some good advice for individual investors I think. So does MoneyWeb.
