Hi all

Per title, what are the best options nowadays for safe browsing for kids?

Thanks in advance.

I used the k9 tool for a while. Not the best but free. now I'm using nortons

K9 started BSOD'ing on Win8 / 8.1 / Win10 machines and I had to uninstall it.

Dunno if it has been resolved yet.

I would also like to hear what alternatives are out there.

When I get to that point I will buy Kerio Control with 5 user accounts for home.

Which platform?

I've used OpenDNS for years and it's pretty good.

I also (Windows 10) use the builtin Parental Controls

Multiple. Desktops, laptops, iPads. OpenDNS is looking like the best bet. Are there some brief steps to setting it up? :o

From my link:
OpenDNS was one of the very first to offer a public DNS service for free with the ability to block adult websites. Previously the configuration was a pain especially for users with dynamic IP address because it requires signing up an account, setting up the filtering and then installing an updater client so that the IP address is up to date. OpenDNS have come up with a new service called FamilyShield where it is pre-configured to block pornography websites by using their DNS servers.

Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.123
Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.123

OpenDNS still offers the classic service called OpenDNS Home where you get to customize the filtering by choosing the categories that you want to allow or block and also adding individual domains to whitelist or blacklist.

Using Norton's Connectsafe DNS is a good start. Provided you're not using a service like UNODNS.

It won't filter search engine images or search results though. Obviously it will filter content at router level though, so all systems connected to the internet will be affected.

Ive installed pfSense on a separate box. Running like a charm.

I'm liking that OpenDNS option - but what happens when I want to watch some pRon? Switch DNS settings on my router?

Yeah this is a good idea.

An old machine with 2 nics installed.

Install the squid and squidguard packages - will also allow you to monitor per IP web usage.
