hi Guys,
i'm looking to buy a netbook and i would like some advice as to the best one to buy under R4000.
also, do netbooks have DVD drives ?
i will be mainly going browsing online, emails, listening to music..are they powerful enough to watch movies on ?

thanks!:)

A netbook would be more portable, at the cost of performance. And many would feel a laptop would be better for transporting than a netbook + external DVD drive.

As far as i know there are not any 'netbooks' with a built in drive, but you can get a slimline external drive.

Take my advice, go for an MSI Wind, great machine, under R4000.00

It can be overclocked very safely to 24% via an official BIOS update, therefore it does not void your warranty.

It also can be turned into a near perfect hackbook.

All this info and more can be found on http://insanelywind.com

The South African version is called a Proline U100

Any of the netbooks with the newish Nvidia ION LE chipset like the Compaq/HP 311 mini. They have the 9400m graphics chip and can play 1080P HD movies + they have an HDMI out. The Asus 1201N is the best ION based netbook out here but is over R4000 though.

i will look into it!
there is so much choice out there i didnt know where to start!

what about 3g capabilities ?
whats the battery life on average ?
i will use it to browse the internet outside of wifi areas.

I have both the HP 311 and the Samsung N140.. Both have their merits but even though the Hp is more powerful (Ion) and has an awesome screen, it suffers from a poor keyboard and it is largish at 12". Paid R2500 on special.

I prefer the Samsung as it has a 10" screen, 10 hour battery life (6 cell battery) and is everything a netbook should be.. Paid R3500.

I guess its down to choice though.. i have read great reviews about the The Asus 1201N as stated above though finding it locally might prove difficult.

Landmark computers and Nivo interactive sells the Asus 1201N. Contemplating getting one myself and wondering what I can pawn off to pay for it :D but it may have to wait a while.

I have an Asus EEE 1001HA, no complaints with it. Plays all the movies i have thrown at it, and has some awesome battery life.

Perfect for travelling.

I dont use my normal size laptop anymore. Paid about R3k for it, but i bought it in the UK.

Doubt you going to find a netbook with an optical drive though.

1201N is not something you would like as a travel companion unless your trips are about 4hrs. If you do get it, make sure to get it in silver as black is a fingerprint magnet of note.

Oh with the U100 you can also get a 9cell battery which lasts super long.

yea, battery life is the one downside to the ASUS 1201N. I could live with that though. The other two I am interested in is pricier (acer timeline 1810 or asus ul20 but none is available locally). just my luck :(
