Hi,

I am trying to determine which current notebook sub R7000 is best. Best being a relative term, but looking at best processor/graphics/ram/usability combination wrt:

- Internet Surfing
- Games (need not be latest FPS or RTS games, just the occasional older MOH or CIV)
- Decent battery life
- Watching DVD
- Running everyday tasks

Currently leaning towards:
Acer TravelMate 5740 http://www.computerstore.co.za/Buy-Notebooks-Laptops-LX-TVF03-008-Acer-TravelMate-5740-332G32Mn-lp-32552.php

mainly because of Core i3 processor and dedicated video RAM

I also looked at the Samsung R530 and MSI CR500. The HP Compaq 620 [WD679EA] also looks decent.

Anyone have used any of these or be able to recommend another brand/model?

Regards

Have a look at the Dell Vostro 1720. It's about R7600 but Dell's service locally is excellent.

ASUS® Home Series: K50ID -
Intel® Pentium® Dual Core
T4400 2.2GHz Processor, 2GB
DDR3 1066MHz Memory (1x 2GB
- 2 Slots)
Has a discrete GPU.

All the i3 cpus are dual cores.

Core i3 = latest tech (2500 FSB,3mb cache)
old dual core = (800 FSB,1mb cache)

Still, in real conditions, these numbers don't mean very much. The core i processors are later technology non the less.

Most definitely would I recommend the Asus over that Acer.

Why? I never owned either brand, only ever had HP,IBM and Fujitsu-Siemens.

BW. Dual core just means the CPU has two cores. You get dual core Pentium 4s as well.

It's a laptop. You won't get full performance like a desktop with an i3.

Personally, I would choose Dell, Asus or Gigabyte over Acer. My main criteria would be to get a 17" screen for multimedia purposes, then 2gig Ram and a dual core processor.

Would you suggest a dual core, compared to core i3 for the graphics benefit?

Internesting review here:http://compreviews.about.com/od/budgetnote/gr/ASUS-K50ID-X1.htm

Think the end of the review sums it up:
Overall, the ASUS K50ID-X1 is a very specialized system. If you want a low cost laptop that can be used for gaming on the go, it is one of the best options to be found for R4,778.79 ($650). On the other hand, if you don't intend to be using it for PC gaming, you would be better served by one of the better general performance Core i3 based laptops.

I would to be honest, I would go for the ASUS as I've had better repair support from them and and they are quite quick at it as well.

As far as the following goes:

[Pentium T4400 2.2GHz + GT 320] vs [i3-330M 2.13Ghz + HD Integrated]

I would say the i3 solution on pure CPU performance and extended battery, whilst the Pentium solution on the NumPad and GPU acceleration which would allow you to play some decent games and videos in full HD through its HDMI port ;).

I can get a friend to benchmark his K50IN but that would be a true reflection of the K50ID.

All the i3 cpus are dual cores.

Most definitely would I recommend the Asus over that Acer.

+1

Refer back to the first message about ASUS :D.

P.S. If you can find an ASUS with the same specs as the K50 but with an i3/i5... That would really future proof you for a few years.
