Best option for new line installation?

Hi I am finally looking to get a home line installation for ADSL but not for voice calls.
By all accounts I can't get past the landline rental charges.
I could get a do package but I don't like the contract and not sure if they will charge me extra for the line installation.
I could also order Closer 1, get the line installed, but then get an ISP to arrange the DSL line through them - but how do I ensure that there is enough {capacity} to activate my DSL line? Or is there somehow that when I order the landline I can get the DSL installed at the same time?
What is the best cost effective (and reliable) option?
I stay in Parkhurst and from what I hear we are too far away from the {link} so that the 4 meg line is very unstable and we won't get near the proper speeds - so a 512 line was suggested but really to start I don't need more than a 384 line.

You wont get ADSL without having the voice line, only if you prefer wireless or wimax.

Okay I can handle getting a voice line.
How do I make sure that once the voice line is in, Telkom does not say "we can not activate DSL on this line, there is no spare capacity".

I had exactly the same problem.
None of the Telkom customer service people at the Telkom shops could assure me that I'd be able to get ADSL without first ordering the line.

I decided to bite the bullet - i won't know if I don't try.
I went to the Telkom Direct store and asked for the voice line and DSL line and apparrantly its going ahead and according to the tech depending on my credit rating the installation would be free - so here's holding thumbs.

hmm...2 working weeks... i could live with that good luck with it

few things, the "do x" packages aren't on contract unless if you want the free elcheapo router. also they're bundled deals, ie. the ADSL rental included with a Telkom Internet data account which is pretty useless if you don't know how to use the free local-only gigs.
at this point in time it's not really recommended to have someone else manage the line, sure you may save a few rands but chances are you'll end up on an over utilized exchange, and there's an other reason that has been mentioned many times in other threads

I don't understand "Have someone else manage the line"? Is that when you ask a non-telkom ISP to give you DSL complete for example? Are you saying go for Do x but not on contract?

ideally we'd want telkom to only handle the ADSL and land line rentals else if the data is with them too you have to start splitting traffic with an other ISP as a 1gB cap is tiny. it gets a bit technical but luckily there's lots of friendly help around here

a warning, i'm gonna blast the person who recommends uncapped even-though it might be less effort

Router self install was easy once I did the Telkom verify thingy. I did not think I needed it because the SMS I received from Telkom said "your ADSL line is activated". So after a couple of failed attempts for the internet connectivity test, I backed up and did the line verification and waited 30 minutes and I am up and running. I used up 1.7 GB on my first night

Oh yeah and on autorunning the CD, it said the router would not work because I had Windows 7 but I just ignored that and continued setting up and it works =D
