Hi Guys/Girls

I'm Considering to set up an I Burst Connection in a Office
with 4 Computers (Currently all four are dial up connections).

The One Computer is Running Windows XP Pro. and the Other 3
Machines will be running Winme.

Is it possible to share this one connection and will it be fast if
all 4 machines are connected ( only e-mail download and some
web surfing). Do I Connect the i-burst receiver on to the Windows Xp
Box as a server? (The Pc's are network Linked via a Hub)
Is There any extra costs involved when sharing the connection?(even
when not exceeding the 3GB cap?)

Is this the easiest way to go?

Thank You

The website does mention that there may be an extra cost due to the increased traffic, but I don't know how they plan to do this. I generate as much traffic as 4 people would anyway. :D

Another thing is the cap, once introduced. My daily surfing, email, IM etc. generates enough traffic for me to hit my cap after one week.

Otherwise, go ahead. Assuming you have a good connection, it should be fast. Be sure to check out the rest of this forum though.

Hennie, got your email, but I will rather reply here for the benefit of others that will follow :)

Firstly, do you have proper anti-virus & firewall software running on all your PCs?

Second, your WinXP Pro PC - how many NICs (Network Cards) does it have? - you would be better off with 2 NICs - connect one to the switch & the other to the iBurst UTD (?).

I have my doubts about networking WindowsME boxes, but I'm sure someone else could comment on that - I skipped WinME completely.

Hi Ic

Will Sygate PF & AVG do for the moment?

The XP Box Only have one network card at the moment, is the
Iburst UTD a usb connection to the PC or a NIC Connection?

The UTD can either be connected via USB or ethernet (but not both at the same time), since your XP box only has 1 NIC you would be better off using USB for the UTD.

Or you could put another NIC in the XP machine - they cost next to nothing.

I think the WBS comment about extra cost is only because it is assumed that there would be more traffic, and thus more pressure on the planned cap. I don't see how they could regulate shared connections.

I don't recommend attaching the UTD to your switch, it can be done but it is better from an Internet Security point of view to have your XPPro PC properly patched & firewalled & sharing your iBurst connection. Like GC suggested, it would be better to have 2 NICs in your XPPro PC, but since you only have 1 right now just setup the UTD with USB, also as an iBurst n00b you might want the comfort provided by the iBurst systray app which only works with USB.

Don't get IBURST its not a good product there support is bad and all. Get adsl much better.

Well put it like this I've been with iburst 1 week they all tell me diffrent stories they do call you up and all. Why not come get my IBURST TEST IT out. If u like then u can get it. I don't want u to be P*** OFF like me. other ppl are downloading good. im not for 1 week i was downloading good but average around 50 kbs etc no more than that but then when u tell the support u got issues. Hi 120,

A few questions for you:

1. Whats your location?
2. Did you get confirmation from WBS that your area is covered?
3. What OS are you using?
4. What connectivity method are you using:
(a) UTD with USB
(b) UTD with Ethernet
(c) UTC

Just wanna check if maybe the problem isn't on your site.

Hennie1:

One alternative way to set yourself will be to purchase a wireless router (+/- R700) and connect it to your Ethernet hub via it's Ethernet port.

Configure the router to dial automatically the iBurst modem via PPoE (use Ethernet or USB) and then set each PC to use the router as the default gateway.

This will be the most solid installation, and although initially you would not use the wireless option of the router, who knows, one day that might become handy...

Buddy, you're hysterical. Give yourself a good slap across the face. That should sort things out.

Hennie dude,

If you dont want to spend any more money, this is what I would do with your setup.

Plug the Iburst Modem into the hub/switch ( I assume the 4 machines are also plugged into this)

Setup your PPPoE connection with the WinXP boxlet. (The "Connect to the Internet broadband authentication option)

Setup ICS (Internet Connection Server) on the WinXP boxlet : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/ics.mspx

All your users should be able to share the connection, and, NO, there is no additional cost from WBS. You are renting the bandwith from them. Simple. Within reason, what you do with it, wether or not you use up your cap, is your indaba, not theirs.

However, if you are willing to splash out a couple of bucks, I would suggest following Iliyan`s advice. It makes the most sense.

Thank You , I Will plug the Modem into the hub and share the Xp
Connection.

Thanks to all , Will Let you Know when i Receive the Iburst Modem.

Lol , Get the cell no's for the techs working on the towers . I havent spoken with the helpdesk in 3 weeks lol . The techs tend to give me straight answers.
And they do tend to return their calls.

DO you use multi session downloading ? If not u wont hit the high numbers when downloading.
