Hi, I am looking to build a pc. Its going to be mostly for running multiple virtual servers and games. My budget is R5000 excluding screen and peripherals which I will buy later, any recommendations? I plan on building this pc myself. I am looking at either a Intel I5 or a AMD cpu. I am looking for a decent but affordable mid range graphics card. I also want to buy quality parts.

Can someone please help me put together a spec for the above requirements

I'd just get cheap AMD quad core. Phenom or Athlon, 4GB maybe 8GB ram.. You dont really need a good card?
Something along the lines of:
athlonx4-2.9ghz R1127.35 <-It does support virtualization
asus-m4a77td-epu4 R944.81
2 x geil-gv32gb1333c9sc-value-series-ddr3 1333 2GB R1104.66
club-radeon-5670-512mb-gddr5-128bit-pcie R999.39
Although i would recommend
corsair-cx400w-eps12v-400w R541.93
You can get away with this i'm sure
gigabyte-odin-470w R375.58
gigabyte-chassis-black-side-vented-panel GZ-X2 R258.62
seagate barracuda-500gb-sata2-7200rpm R452.30
Lg 22x-sata-black-beige R209.41

For a Total of R5472.12

Sure you could get it cheap if you shopped around..

Hey :), thanks. That spec looks good. Regarding the graphics card, I want a mid range graphics card that will play all or most of the current games even if it means lowering the resolution and limiting the quality a bit. Have you bought through prhophecy.co.za, how do their prices compare to other pc shops?

Ya prophecy have really good service. You can and should always shop around. As far as online stores go they have average pricing, not a rip off but not the best..

Have a look at this thread: Click-ME! lists most of the shops that we buy from.
Rebeltech are down (till 2 August), but they usually have the cheapest prices, with the exception of pcint.co.za but they have limited variety of stock..

With reference to the graphics card. Most if not all people on here will recommend the ATI 5770 as the best price/performance in the midrange card bracket. But that's usually about R600 more than the 5670

Thanks, I never knew there were so many online pc vendors in SA, we aren't as backward as I thought. I am thinking of spending a little more and getting an ATI 5750. I also think I should go for a 550w psu and spend a bit more on a good case. It looks like I would have to spend about R6000 to get a decent pc.

Nakedpeanut gave a good build there. The 5670 performs just under a 9800gt so not to bad. Spending extra on a 5750 isn't a bad idea. It outperforms the 4850 by about 10% and gives you DX11.

Well I'm typing this from a PC i just built for my sister
i5 750 OC to 3.4Ghz
4GB ram
5770
1xHDD and 1xDVD

and i'm running it off an OCZ StealthXStream 400w. No problems and is supper quiet even under load! (been stress testing for a while now..)

So with that build you don't need a 550w unless it's a cheapo brand (hence the 460w odin)
The corsair cx400w and mine are perfect for your build.

Ok, I've decided to spend up to R6000 and have decided to go for a entry level gfx card for the time being, like a ATI 4350 and spend the rest on other aspects like CPU, case, psu, mb. I will buy a better gfx card at a later stage when I need it. The reason I want a bigger psu is for future upgrades or in the event that I need to add more cards and more peropherals.

Stay with Naked peanuts build but get this power supply:

zalman ZM500-ST : 500w ( 12v : 360w ) , with EPS12V support , 80P

http://www.prophecy.co.za/zalman-zm500st-500w-360w-with-eps12v-support-p-63180.html

If thats the plan then you can start looking at the Phenom II range or i5 750... if you wish to stay with AMD that mobo is perfect even if you want to go 6 core, you dont really need more than that. If you decide to move to Intel then you going to have to spend about R1200 on a decent mobo..
Maybe a mobo like this:
http://www.prophecy.co.za/p55cd53-lga1156-i5i7-dualchannel-ddr3-pcie-p-66808.html
or http://www.prophecy.co.za/asus-p7p55-lga1156-dualchannel-ddr3-crossfirex-p-64443.html
since i assume you might be adding additional LAN cards etc. A mATX mobo is no good as it has no space for addons really.

Have a look at http://vtechnologies.co.za/ they have some very good prices for a walk in store! I usually buy form their Midrand branch (head office), but they also have a branch in PTA:
Glen Village Shopping Center,
Hans Strijdom rd,
Pretoria-East
Will most prob me smaller but they have quite a selection of items..

If you do go, have a look at their cases and PSU's and make sure, that you buy a 80+ certified PSU.

EDIT: lol I took some time on that post, Qwik beat me to it. I also dont think you really need more than that. If you want more then the next step would be a 1055T

If you arent going to get a decent graphics card now, then just go with integrated graphics. Crap for gaming, but at least you arent wasting any money.

Remember to include R1000 for Win7 Home Premium 64 bit, unless you already have a copy.

I'd get either an Intel i5 750 or an AMD Athlon II or Phenom II. Maybe a Phenom II if you need virtual servers etc.
