We take many pictures of our son , videos and photos on my wife's iPhone as it's always handy or near by.

I want to start using picasa.
What's the best app that allows me to upload pics or movies from the phone directly and without connecting a pc all the time.
There are some free one's like Picasa HD Lite - then there many other varying in price?

Also want the parents and family to be able to see these pictures should they wish.

Just going through my photo apps to see which ones export to Picasa directly:
iPhoto: No
Filterstorm: No
Snapseed: No
PerfectPhoto: No
Camera! (Smugmug): Yes
PhotoGene: Yes
Pix: No.

All of them export to Facebook and most to Flickr. Are you set on using Picasa?

I imagine Google+ would do it. Picassa and Google+ are very closely linked, and Google+ should be able to automatically upload pics when you are connected to wifi

I have an Android, but for me, Google+ uploads images, then I use either the Picassa website or Picassa app to view them (Google+ sucks for viewing etc)

Unfortunately there is no Google+ app for the iPad - the iPhone app does work on it but it's crappy. It's the only reason I haven't invested my time in Google+.

How much storage does flickr have?

I have 4gb of photos I want to store somewhere.

I haven't used flickr but it might be something else to check out. Picasa's app is pretty easy to use. I use it and I am able to sync my photos pretty seamlessly.
