Hey folds.

I have a macbook pro 17" (mid 2009) that i would like to upgrade to 8gb. I have been looking around online at the best place to get ram and so far the one that i am thinking about is http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/
I have chatted to them and they do ship to sa for about $16.
There for its quite a good deal.
But i would like to try keep it local. Are there any recommendations for similar ram that you guys can recommend from a local supplier?

You can get any ddr3 laptop RAM and it will work great. And prices have really dropped. There course tons of places that sell it. Here is one, PC International. They have 4gb Kinston DDR3 laptop memory for R340, so to get 8gb will cost R680. http://pcint.co.za/components.php

Lies! You need the special Mac branded memory else your laptop will blow up and send you dog/cat photos to the depths of hell.

Upgraded my early 2008 MBP with 4G Kingston & 500 G Seagate HDD, runs like a bomb, excuse the pun!:D

Careful it has a remote trigger!

:D

Yeah, Steve has them manufactured with built in timers to lull you into a false sense of security/accomplishment for saving $$$ and then one day it just catastrophicly detonates. Some people have been known to have lost pets & children in the process so it's really not worth it ;)

Don't mean to hijack, but does the same apply for the 2011 iMac? Can you use any DDR3 desktop RAM?

Edit: I see from a video the iMac appears to use notebook RAM?

Any opinions on whether Patriot is better than Corsair?

There is very little difference in price, but Kalahari is usually reliable.

Anyone know if digital planet is still in existence?

I don't think there's much difference. As long as it has a warranty of sorts I'm happy.

Digital Planet is still around.

**UPDATE**

Thank you for the lead to Kalahari.
I just ordered 2 x 4 GB 1066mhz Patriot SODIMM's for my May 2010 MacBook Pro at a delivered cost of R739.90

I used 2 x 4mb Patriot 1333mhz DDR3 SODIMM's in my iMac 27" 4 core and they have worked well to date. So I just went with the brand I know.
My MBP uses 1066mhz and my iMac 1333mhz. Fortunately the iMac has extra slots so I have 12MB memory. Great for the the photo and video editing I play with.
Yes I will also have 2 x 2GB 1066mhz DDR3 for sale when my upgrade arrives in a weeks time. Will place them in the classifieds.

Thats HUGE ... compared to the 48kB is a zx spectrum :)
I think its safe to assume that the OP means 12GB... not 12MB.
