Can someone please point me in the direction of learning how to code for apps? Web based or class room, but I'd like to have a structured course going through the basics before trying to figure everything out using google searches..

I take it university is out of the question for some reason?

A good beginner book or 2 is also a good way to learn.
What language are you wanting to learn?

Yes. For two reasons, I am already enrolled for my masters in another direction next year, and also I don't want to pay R100k to learn just so I can work on an idea that I have..

I assume Java would be best for android dev?

You don't really have much of choice.

Buying a good beginner book and then an intermediate book will probably be best. I used to use Wrox (had the burgundy + balck/whate photo on the cover) back in the day.

Also look here: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/ (or Google for similar)

The best way to learn how to program is to sit with that book in front of a computer and coding the sample/your own stuff. Just reading won't help.

EDIT: http://www.tutorialspoint.com/java/

Awesome. Thought that might be best. Will pop past exclusive books and see what they have. Thanks for the assist.

Go to www.hyperiondev.com this is a web site dedicated for I.T professionals and people who want to start out at programming. Their courses are 100% free, the only thing you need to get is dropbox - which is also free. This project is designed to help people develop applications (with no experience of programming) OR who have programmed before and just want a 'refresher'. It was created by one of my long-lost friends. Even if you are an I.T Professional/Electronic Engineer please sign up to this site. They also work on part-time projects at underprivileged schools like setting up computer systems, networks and teaching the kids about digital technology. They cover an advanced course in Python - including topics like A.I. The other course which I think they cover is Java - which does not cover topics as advanced as Python. And the other is C++ - The least advanced course, primarily targeted to those who have programmed in C/C++ and need to refresh their memory. I also suggest you get a good book or some tutorials of the web. It's been a while since I've visited their web site, so please find out about the course which they are doing. Email the student help line: [email protected] to find out more. They are a start-up. Please help spread the word to other I.T Students/Pro's and to anyone interested in software development.

Couldn't have said it better, its pointless just reading it. If you're stuck with something you can maybe try YouTube.

Both approaches will help you reach your goal. The only difference is classroom learning will cost you more depending upon the length of the program, whereas on the web you can find lots of free tutorials on html5 app development. I'd suggest the Microsoft Virtual Academy because it's free, designed by the industry’s leading experts and you can learn to code your app at your own pace.
