Best Prepaid Plan on any network except Cell C?

So my contract with Cell C just finished and I am now prepaid.

Which network provider would you recommend and which tariff plan?

My requirements:
1) No Cell C.
2) Don't care much for data usage on prepaid as I have a dual sim phone with an axxess data sim on it.
3) Cheap call rates

What is wrong with Cellc voice? Since you have dual sim device and Axxess for you data why not just change your Cellc sim to 66c per minute price plan and force it to vodacom 2G because you just going to use it for voice? That would be the best option I think.

Prepaid prices are as follows:

Cellc: 66c per minute
MTN: 79c per minute
Vodacom: 79c per minute
Telkom: 75c per minute

Virgin Mobile: 99c per minute
Me&You mobile: 69c per minute on their R50 plan.

their calls drop to frequently for me. its very frustrating.

And no signal in Bellville (so then you need to roam on Vodacom) but when you get to the CBD, you can't roam on vodacom so you need to switch back... That was a daily effort.

Well if that is your problem then you really only have 2 options. MTN and Vodacom. Telkom is good but a switch from Telkom to MTN if you go out of coverage is most certain a call drop. This will obviously only apply when driving and might even be better than Cellc. Basically everything is better than Cellc.

Just your normal rica docs id,proof of residence and you must take the number with you that you want to port. They send a OTP to it.

my second phone ( work ) is on telkom mobile and the quality is great. haven't had dropped calls or similar issues.
 
one last thing, i remember seeing a forum-nite complain about not receiving his bank's OTP after the port.

is there something I must do / say/ ask for to prevent this happening?

Nope if the port goes through correctly you won't have any of those problems. Most of the times porting works great. If it does not pm the Telkom Mobile rep here and they will get the routing updated ASAP and you will be sorted. Routing updates happen when the port go through but can sometimes but very unlikely not get updated so you end off not being able to receive calls from MTN for example.

Telkom will request MTN to update the routing and then you will be sorted. I have ported a couple of times and it is pretty streamlined nowadays....

This is my frustration too in Joburg. Even in places that it should be good, I find the quality drops.

Pinnacle of my frustration is finding that I need to restart my phone periodically because it somehow loses sync or contact (???) with the network. Restart and I get flooded with text messages, IMs and what-not. Eish!
 
OP: forget about saving 4 cents per minute - go MTN or Vodacom

If you have had anywhere near the nightmare of a 24 months on Cell C that I have had, you are now looking for voice that just works. My worry is the handover between MTN and Telkom when using Telkom mobile - Cell C often dropped the call.

I convert to prepaid on the 28th of this month and will port straight to MTN.

Remember that once you port, you need to wait 3 months to port again......

It is actually 60days on the dot. Not a minute or even 1sec earlier.... So still enough room to play around with all the providers.

My number was on Cellc,Virgin Mobile,Vodacom, Telkom and now finally settled on MTN prepaid 1c per second. For me the best network by far. Vodacom is very good too but too expensive.
