Hello,

I live in the UK and am going to SA for a month long holiday in March and would like to know the best prepaid sim to use in my Desire HD which includes some data allowance.

Please point me in the right direction, thanks

Where will you be?

Anyway in Cape Town, MTN was the best voice clarity I'd had and then buy airtime and convert to data via USSD codes.

Explanations for that are around here and on their site.

Currently with Cell C, but no idea about there prepaid sims.

Dependant on how much data you plan on using, Cell C will be the better option.

I will be in CT then along the garden route to PE. Don't need a massive amount of data and won't make a lot of calls, probably mostly texts.

Will look at Cell C thanks :)

Whatever you do. Don't buy a sim at the airport. Go to Pick 'n Pay retail stores and get a sim there for 1ZAR or something around that price.

Dont forget to RICA the sim before leaving the store you wont be able to use it. Make sure you have your passport on you when you go out to buy it.

Get a Vodacom prepaid sim. Reception will be best if you're going to do the garden route.

Ok looking at vodacom, do I get their starter pack? I don't see any prepaid package that has a data allowance either :(

This RICA thing seems to be a bit of a pain, they need something with my address on but I'm there for holiday since immigrating 7 years ago :( Must I get a family member to get it for me?

Will be much easier if a family member gets it for you!

You can load airtime on the sim and just convert it to data, very easy to do. Think its *111# on any phone & you get the Vodacom menu.

MTN def....

8ta to be honest, they give away free sim cards at their Telkom stores and they provide a reasonable rate on data whilst roaming on MTN.

8ta is definitely not your best choice if you're gonna do the garden route, neither would be CellC (only good reception in the big cities).

Get a Vodacom sim. End of story.

Cell C roams on Vodacom, as does Virgin Mobile due to it being a fork of Cell C to be honest. But I was fed up with Vodacom, had my last straw with Virgin Mobile not providing 3G whilst 8ta(which roams on MTN) so far has provided a better solution.

OK an update

My sister in law has got me a Vodacom Starter Pack sim and has RICA'd it

This is all well and good for topping up with airtime and sms (if I understand it correctly) but what if I want to add data usage onto it, say like 10meg of data?

Leave tomorrow night for a month, can't wait! :)

Hi there. You can find the pricing here:

http://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/se...cted=4_a_Bro_0_Bro_1220&ciFormat=default&ht=t

You load the airtime to cover the purchase.....then on your phone you dial *111# and press the call button. You then just follow the menu.

Remember, you might have to change your APN when you get here.
