Best price for the PS3?

Why pay double the price of an XBox 360 when the performance gain of the PS3 is like 6%

It doesn't make any sense. R4500 is a realistic price for the PS3, not +-R6000. And even then, it's a high.

The PS3 is gonna fall have a tough time in the SA market until they get those prices right.

Where did you get a figure of 6% from? I am yet to find a review that rates the PS3's tapped power above that of the 360.

All I hear is how much potential the 360 has, well my kids have the potential to be future presidents of SA but potential and results are generally miles apart.

I'm just assuming. The general concensus on the web is that the PS3 is only slightly more powerful than the 360, but by a fraction - hence my 6% commment. I doubt it's even that.

I too still have to find a review that rates the PS3 is more powerful than the 360 and haven't had much luck.

I'm all for the XBox 360 and hope the PS3 fails :)

lol... ok the ps3 is pretty much on par with the xbox360 BUT know im not a fanboy... and this is fact: the xbox360 only uses a dvd drive FOR GAMES( the external hd-dvd doesn't have the speed for games) while the ps3 has a blu-ray as we all know and that CAN bhe used for games... the only problem is that the dvd's are almost or maxed as is with the xbox... which is **** coz that means that the xbox can't have a game bigger then 8.7gigs or something like that... where as the ps3 has 50odd gigs to play with... now it's the same problem with the psp coz umds only hold 1.8 gig's but that ok with the low res. it xbox 360 has gotta have HD content... so the ps3 will be the more future proof idea(in a years time coz buying now would be F$#%ING STUPID). BUT now as it stands the 360 will be the much better choice. and the final cherry on this cake is that microsoft only want the xbox360 to last for 3 - 4 years (like the first xbox), where as sony want it to last 5-7years( the sony's idea for the ps3 lasting that long it still rumours). There's alot of hate mail about the ps3 now... and it's well justified... but it will be the better system in a year, and once sony has ironed out some of those problems that they famously have in the ps3 it will be an aweome system... and sony will have to drop the prices as NO ONE in there right mind will get it (6000 bucks is a lot in anyones eyes). it will only make sales worth smileying about when it comes down to R4500...

Nice article.

Amen. Now can't we all just get along? :D

Naah, what'd be the fun in that? ;)

all said and done I do agree. It's about the games.

@Scotty, Not to start a war, a appreciate the level headness that seems to finally be creaping into the forum ;) - Blu ray has more space, but has a game ever been ruined by being multiple disc? Consider the Oblivion approach as well - They release the content as downloads over time, which makes more sense to developers to defer costs over time.

Also, apparently (this is word of mouth hearsay, I unfortunately have no links to back it up) According to the guys that have cracked Blu-Ray and PS3 encryption, the PS3 games are no where near hitting 8Gb yet let alone getting near the size of Blu-ray.

You forgot to add that the blu-gay drive on the PS3 is only 2x while the DVD drive on the X360 is 12x or higher which means it can run games with the minimal requirement for a HDD or Memory Unit only for save games.

On the PS3 the current games have to dump around 15-25% of their content on the HDD BEFORE you even get to play it! That means you cannot really plug & play a new games without removing some content from another game if your 60GB HDD is already maxed out.

You also mention the limitations of DVD, well Blue Dragon ships on 3 DVDs and you only get to swap the 2nd DVD after playing around +15 hours on the 1st DVD anyhow. Hardly a hassle I might add?

Sony is simply shoving their precarious technology into people's throats by giving them paper spec predictions which in practice fall behind what they promised.

Well, newb, you're the one that put it like that . . . ;)

It's a boring subject - price is constrained to 6299 by the supplier.

Well then, like Doobi & Gavin said: R6199 and its boring. Why? Coz its out of our hands and we dont have a 20GB model available due to Sony's masterplan in making money or simple production screw-up.

If you dont like the thread simply stay out or stick to the topic as well. ;)

Isn't the bandwidth of those multipliers different per drive type? Ie. 1X in DVD usage is equal to 1.321 MB/s, roughly equivalent to a 9X CD-ROM

ya... i was thinking the same thing... thats like saying that oranges are better and more round where as the apple is smaller... but at the end of the day if i through them they would go the same speed

Not sure of hte exact numbers, but it comes down to the data throughput.

Apparently PS3 Bly-Ray can only sustain a maximum of 35Mb/s - it's designed to be enough to stream a movie, not to stream large chunks of game data in short bursts.

PS3, SMEES3... Anyone actually bought one?

Let me know if you're interested cause I will gladly take the money, which I will use to buy 2x XBOX360's with and wrap it in a PS3 "skin", specially for you... :D

and keep one to myself, of course... :p
