Best price / performance ratio SSD currently

Looking to upgrade to an SSD soon.

What is a good brand to go for?

Looking to spend between 1600-2000.
 
Intel make great SSD's, really really fast and well supported. 80gb goes for like R2k. They're updating them at the end of the year though.
 
To run my OS.

Currently using an old 7200rpm sata drive, and it's slowing down my PC.

Good spec PC with crappy hard drive for OS = sluggish.

Might also install the most demanding game I'm playing on there if I can.
 
Not really. There are faster SSD's but they are super expensive. The best source for SSD reviews is still Anandtech. The vertex series is pretty decent too.

Like I said, Intel are pretty much doubling the capacity in Q4 2010 though for the same price, if you can hold out that long.

Man do I want that 80gb SSD though!
 
So you want to boot up fast? I leave my PC in hibernate and it resumes within 10 seconds. Rest of the OS is not sluggish at all. And all thats going to happen with games is you'll load levels/maps faster. Wont get any increase in fps.
 
No Archer, I want to be able to multi-task on my 6 core AMD without having to wait for files to load from the HDD.

I often have four lines of tabs open in Firefox while synching my phone and ipod, installing random apps and generally just messing around on my PC.

My hard drive is the slowest component of my rig, therefore I feel I will get a noticeable boost going the SSD route.

If better drives are coming out at the end of the year then I think I will rather wait till then.

Fair enough, then you will get something useful out of it. However Intel is releasing the 22nm (iirc) SSDs later this year - double the size, same price. It would be wise to wait methinks.

I got myself one of those Momentus XT drives for my laptop last week and It's made a huge difference.
I imaged/cloned my old hard disk with all it's crap on it, so I didn't think I'd see a massive difference, but the performance increase was evident from about the third boot up (after caching).

I normally power on my laptop, go grab coffee and by the time I'm back it's ready for me to log on (~2mins). Now, by the time I've gone around the desk to plug in my charger, its happily waiting for me to log on (~45s).

Highly recommended for laptop users with just a single drive bay.
If you've got a desktop with a few spare drive bays and the cash, rather get a dedicated SSD for the OS.
 
Seriously considering one of these.

When SSD prices come down at the end of the year, I could just buy a semi decent (160gb or so) size SSD and use the Momentus hybrid as the secondary drive for my machine.

This should serve me till then, as my current drive is really just not cutting it.

While i agree with you, if you have the money for it then buy it. People blow 2-5k on mobo's 2-4k on cpu, 1-3k on memory and then drop 450 bucks for a 500gb 7200rpm drive :D.

I only got a little 250GB in side my machine :( an then the externals..

Sorry if I am asking a stupid question but how does this drive connect to the Laptop?
 
It's a 2.5" drive. They designed for laptops, but you can get brackets to house them in your 3.5" drive bays, which are in tower cases

Thanks for reply. More stupid questions: Are all Laptop drives the same? Will this drive fit any Laptop? I have never taken my Laptop drive out - is it easy to replace the old drive with the Momentus?
