In a short while I'll have a user on Home384, making a remote desktop connection to our office, which is going to run on Business512. Both Webafrica (SAIX) accounts.

What would the best program be for remote desktop? Tried RealVNC, UltraVNC, Windows Remote Desktop, and Remote Administrator 2.1, all on local network connection, and it's a much of a muchness...

Any advise?

Windows Terminal server would be the answer. It allows you to connect using a lot less bandwidth than with the products you've tried. Obviously this will only make sense if more people is going to use it, as I think Terminal server edition is slightly expensive. It will then also be possible to use rdesktop under linux to connect.

Not much help, I know. But bandwidth is your biggest problem if you want to use VNC, etc.

I've been using LogMeIn Free to assist a friend in Canada during the last few days. It was like working on my own PC, with virtually no lag. Best of all, it's free, with the most important difference between the free product and and the paid option being file transfer. But then you can just use email or FTP.

Edit: BTW, I'm on a 512k line but my friend only on 196k. I compared it to a 512k-512k session and there was no apparent difference.

Hamachi:D

Works fine for me with iBurst

From the Hamachi website:

------- Alternatively -------

We are in the process of talking to LMI guys and they appear to have
a solid alternative to Hamachi+RD combo. LogMeIn Pro system is worth
looking at if Remote Desktop over Hamachi causes you some headache
or you are not comfortable with setting up Hamachi to run as a service.

Its more impressive when you remember you're only as fast as your slowest part - ie uploading.

on windows platform, terminal server is great. Otherwise VNC.

Little known trick - if you want to connect to a terminal server as the console, add /console as a command line paramter to the executable.

Thanks for replies sofar! Keep them coming...

How much is Terminal server, or is it standard in W2003? We have Windows 2003 Small Business Server...

Remote Desktop Connection is Terminal Server, albeit very cut-down.

Netsupport Manager is great, if only I can justify the $600 though... :(

Something i've been wondering about too recently since i don't feel like trecking up to just to code on some machines in microsoft stuff etc.. anyways question i was gonna ask is : What is the bandwidth cost for using it on avg ?(i understand that the more display changes or services used color depth etc the usage increases)

What about Skype? They now have a desktop sharing thing...

I've only used RealVNC and Remote Desktop, and I must say Remote Desktop worked 10 better for me (and I know that many people will disagree), f.e. for some reason on 2 servers after rebooting RealVNC will not connect even though the process (the server) is running there, also Remote Desktop seemed muach faster than RealVNC

bwana - yes they have... Im not sure about the bandwidth it uses... and also I have not used it myself yet.

I cant remember if its on the new version of their software (they have a new one with sms & so on) or on a plug-in... either way, its free software and free to use.... + its a skype product. :D
