Best Route for Petrol

Route A: 36.2km
- Malmsburg Road via Fisantekraal (R312) onto R304

- By-passes any urban traffic.
- Mostly speed limit of 100.
- Few stops.

Route B: 32.5km

- Goes via built up urban areas. Sonstraal Heights, CapeGate/Kraaifontein, onto N1, Stellenbosch Turn Off
- Uses the N1. (120)
- Many stop starts before hitting N1.

Both routes take about the same time to get to the crossing point of the Stellenbosch exit. (+- 15 minutes)

The one is around an extra 150km per month.. but I am wondering which would in reality use the most petrol.

From your descriptions, A, by far. Cars are vastly more economical at constant speed.

Distances are too short for you to notice. If your looking at saving petrol (this seems to be your commute planning), then rather focus on those short trips during lunch - avoid them altogether.

Sure, his savings might be minimal, but he will still be saving. Think of the long-term implications of the difference in routes - much less wear on the engine when using route A.

Fuel savings won't be vast, but the knock-on effect of lower frustration, lower maintenance and probably lower accident risk might well be.

My car usesd 14 litres/100km in stop start-start traffic - and 8.5 litres/100km in open road.

Fairly large in percentage difference!

Our car is consistent so from my point of view not much of an economic difference.

Just checked the maps (was on my netbook last night so couldn't), Route A would be way faster and less frustrating to ride. Also you get to enjoy some nice countryside scenery throughout the entire commute.
