This question's probably been asked before so if there's another thread relating to it please point me to it.

I'm looking for a router (not too expensive) to stick between my ethernet hub and my iBurst terminal. I've got an SMC 8 port hub so I was looking for an SMC router but they all seem to be upwards of R1500 which is a bit more than I'd like to spend :D . Any alternative suggestions will be much appreciated.

I'm not looking for a wireless solution.

Thanks.

hey ya shane

If this helps, I tried iBurst with a Belkin 54G wireless xDSL router - no success. If you find this kind of thing fun or interesting, try build your own router with an old box and ipcop.

best of luck.

or just use MandrakeLinux or FreeBSD so that you dont waste a box to IPCop, rather u can use it for other stuff while it is being a router

I have a linksys wrt54g and it works perfectly well, have had no problem with it and it has a lot of features. It is cheap as well, you can get them between 650 and 750 if you shop around.

I must agree with the IPCop thing though, I know nothing of linux but I set one up today for the fun and it was easy, it has more features than the router so it is nice to fool around with. Also the software is free as was mentioned. If you are going to do it take an old box that you will never use again cause you can do noting else on it once you load IPCop.

By the way, if I want to stick a bandwidth meter on it, does anyone know which software to use? I now there is a addon server for IPCop and then you can install addons but they stress on the site that it has not been tested by IPCop so...

Thanks for your suggestions guys, I'll keep looking. I wish I had an old PC to use but I'm in Durbs and I can't seem to find any places that sell refurbished PC's. I'd only need a P2 or something like that to use as a router right?

Anyone got any idea of prices for those WRT54G routers? Also will I be able to plug my ethernet hub into it?

Hi Shane101,
Can also try the SMC Barricade(G) wireless Router.

Model No SMC2804WBR (EU) Costs between R600 and R700 and gives 4 Ethernet Connection + 1 WAN Connector to connet to the IBurst Modem. Oh and even though you didn't want it, plenty of Wireless Connections. :D

Features include Zonealarm F/W NAT & VPN capability

Regards,

Good package

or 602LAN Suite 2004 , with upto 5 clients Free....
:D I found LAN Suite this weekend, installed and using on my 2 pc Windows network - yes, Windows, because I have no spare PCs to run BSD on and need Windows for my continued livelihood. Nice software - finally a proxy server that works and doesn't require *ix or tons of resources.

Verdict: ***** (5/5)

LinkSys WRT54G

Go for the WRT54G very user friendly and if you mod the firmware you can hook up to JAWUG with an external grid antenna. :)
