Hi, new to this forum.
I would like to start a discussion more than report a problem.
I have had this discussion with numerous people and everyone has different ideas on this.
The way Telkom wants you to setup the router is to set your lan to auto detect. Then you go to 10.0.0.2 and setup your password etc. And boom, your connected whenever you switch your pc on, but I found that it was very unstable. My MSN messenger kept signing in and out and i had problems signing into mirc.
So what i did is after I setup the config in the router(username etc) I set my ip on my personal network back to my own personal range.
Then I went to internet options and setup a seperate internet connection.
In other words everytime I want to connect I do it via an icon on my desktop.
For some reason this makes my connection stable and I have no problems whatsoever.
I do webdesigning so I make use of little things like no-ip.com,ftp, etc. no hassles.
Now I am not much of a fundi on these things but, why does that make such a difference?
Am I doing it wrong? Am I doing it right?
Some techies at Telkom says yes some say no...
Any technical help advice here? :D

Marconi, marconi, marconi

There is no good reason why it shouldn't work the way Hellk... er, sorry, Telkom says you should do it. It's my feeling that these nasty little routers are (a) inconsistent and (b) unreliable cheap c&@p.

Just my opinion, you understand.

With any other router that you buy, you can log into their website and check the latest firmware version, download and install a later revision if required. Anyone know of a way of doing that on the Marconi? Nuff sed.

I never even knew stuff like that is possible.
Wonder what Telkom would reply if you had to ask them that.
'Eh...eish...eh...ish e-baklog...eh...'
They probably don't even know themselves...

NO it's not broken, works fine.
It's the way that I set it up that I was wondering about.

You guys aren't helping.
I'm one of the lucky ones who don't have problems with my marconi router.
Ok tell you what, forget the fact that it is a Marconi.
And concentrate on the way I set up my connection.
Any one else have it that way?

Dunno, Jack

The reason we haven't helped is that the scenario you describe makes no sense! There is no reason why it shouldn't work the way Telkom / the manual tells you to set it up, i.e. with the 10.0.0.x network - in fact I have 2 customer sites where that is exactly the way it is, and apart from having to reboot the router every now & again it works "just fine". Th reason I said those Marconi's are rubbish is the setup is *big time* counter-intuitive, you have to reboot every time you make the smallest config change, the user interface is *u-r-g-l-y*, and there is no techsupp.

Apart from that, they are fine! :-(

But if you have it working your way, (from your description it sounds like you are bypassing the marconi's router, using the modem only, and setting up your own PPPoE session on the PC), then why mess with it? I know it's not that convenient to "dial up" every time you want to use the Internet, but you can probably set up the session never to time out, can't you? You may not be able to share the modem between several users, but on the other hand that might work too.

Like another member said, looks like the router is broken. My guess is that the modem portion is working OK, and the router has "issues". See if you can get Telkom to swap it out, if you want it to work properly.

Jack Goa,

Many people have it setup that way. Especially corporates. If you don't have to, don't. If you want to tinker with web servers and stuff on your own pc it is just a crap load of technical crap you have to go through to get it working and one mistake can translate in hours of hunting down the glitch.

If you have plenty of pc's on the network (more than you have seperate logins for, then let the router do the login for you. If not, login on each PC by itself. Each PC will get its own IP.

I know the advanced network gurus will prefer tinkering with the router but for people not keen on tinkering day in and day out (who want to experiment a little with servers and stuff) I would not recommend it.

Simple enough?

As to why some things don't work well. The router translates public internet data to your private network because you will run a class C network on the LAN and is practically invisible to the world outside. Some proggies need a little bit of help to move across your private LAN through the router onto the web...

Simply put... :D

wooooooha finally some1 agrees

i really have a huge problem with these marconi routers!!!

well i often game online and for the first 3 months i had the router everything worked well and i had no problems whatsoever, but then suddenly i experienced huge delay issues during gaming, i have tried everything, but really everything and nothing seemed to work. then i told my dad to replace the router and as i plugged in the new router everything was fine, i had nothing to moan about but 9 weeks later i had the same problem again! THIS MAKES ME FURIOUS!!! it is now even unstable and is just making me even more angry!

i dont even wanna go to telkom because the will say no its not our problem, so what i think i must do is TAKE THAT FRIKKEN ROUTER AND SMASH IT INTO 10000000 pieces!!!!
