Best smartphone for less than R1000

Have any of you bought a Smartphone for less than R1000?
The various service providers (MTN, Vodacom, CellC) have their own branded ones.
Here are some others:

I'm interested for a friend who doesn't have much cash but would like one that works OK and has a full Android installation (not the stripped down Android that some phones use).
Any suggestions much appreciated!

Funny you should ask. Normally anything under a R1000 sucks balls. But today I ordered this "beast" for an old uncle and I am kinda excited to check it out. OLED and Marshmallow

Doogee make a good phone. Cash crusaders have the X5max for R1299

Or consider getting a good second hand phone?

Shoot 2 comes with Nougat.
