best software to have for my new pc?

ok so im building a new rig (its high end so software system requirements won't be an issue)

and i would like to know whats the best software to have. what are your opinions etc.

i'm installing windows 7 ultimate 64bit. software does not have to be free ware so whatever you think is best. e.g. best converters, best download managers, image editors etc etc. however they must be easy to use

i am also building this for varsity so please keep that in mind when suggesting.

also good calender software so i dont forget assignments etc etc.

I recently formatted and here's the list I made:

Mcafee
Spybot
Malwarebytes
Winamp
VLC
Latest drivers ect.
Adobe 9
Office
Winrar/Winzip
Alcohol 120% / Deamon Tools
Firefox
Nero
AllwaySync / Cobian Backup (Backup software)

and the list goes on and on...
this was just some stuff that came to mind, I'm sure the others have better suggestions. ;)

i would lose mcafee, daemon tools and nero from that list straight away. Bloat/spy/crap/ware a person doesn't want or need on their pc.
 
i would add Dragon Age to that list :) (You might miss a few assignments though)

for a download accelerator, i use Internet Download Manager. Works pretty well for me.
 
Ad Muncher (not free) to kill ads. Better than AdBlock Plus and works with all browsers plus allows proxy browsing.
Comodo FireWall Pro.
Good AV. I'd stay away from Microsoft junk.

Norton is too bloated.

MS Defender or whatever it's called? You don't go from Zero to Hero (in security software/AV) in one or two iterations. I wouldn't trust MS AV soft for a couple more years. Shill reviewers and astroturfers be damned. :) MS may be good in other software but here they are quite new and previously poor.

For example I recognise that Comodo has probably the best FireWall/HIPS solution available (it happens to also be free) but their AV is pretty sub-standard (missed a good few viruses other things picked up).

Nothing wrong with Microsoft's Security Essential (MSE)--it has detected and removed trojans that McAfee/Nortan and AVG missed. It has also been tested eslewhere to be relatively good. Check it out.

Of course there's nothing wrong with it. It's just not one of the better products. I'll change my mind when it continues to receive great reviews for several more years. As said, Zero to Hero very quickly is not hype I buy into.

You can talk a lot of crap...

Noton bloated...? Have you even used the new Norton or even tried to read the news on it? I clearly see not.

MSE is one of the best free solutions in the market and seems foolish that now that they provide a viable solution that you now shun it because of it from Microsoft and them not being a dinosaur in the game...? Remember Microsoft Defender is an anti spyware package and not a full anti virus package like Microsoft Security Essentials.

Comodo who? They even don't seem to be certified by anybody, so they are practically more of a danger rather than a solution to one's security.

Well stick to your advice, I'll stick to mine. Norton is still bloated. Everyone says so, folks who are using the current version too.

What a load of poppycock :). You said a lot but you also said nothing. "One of the best free solutions" - means what.... is it the second best, third best... in the top 10, top 100? I gave my rationale for not believing in Microsoft. I don't mind paying R200-250 for an AV per year for 3 machines. It's not a major cost.

Comodo FireWall Pro has been reviewed many times and is the best HIPS and Firewall solution for free - and probably the best HIPS/FW solution overall.
Their AV does suck and I agree - it's not certified, but there is no certification process like AVERT/AV-Comparatives for Firewalls and what there is, their reviews were great.

Guys like you read one review and get a hard on for a product. I look at products over years. That's why I don't favour newcomers so much, until they've proven themselves.

You've got the opinion of a pro-MS shill. I definately will include your recommendations as things to avoid.

Ok then, the 2nd best free AV. The top free AV would be Avira, but I'll probably it use next month.

Now please define bloated? I'll just keep my cool and I'll stop the name calling.

One review? The have been various reviews, before and after it was released. So I think it's more about adapting with what's the best on the market and moving on with it.

We are talking about security here so how does waiting a few years help with anything? Pro-MS? Just because I'm supporting a product that seems to be doing it's job better than some of your "recommendations"?. You seem as ignorant as the other guy you usual argue with.

I can agree on the HIPS part of things, but the antivirus issue is what I'm arguing about and you've already proven that Comodo ain't any good on that part.
