Best streaming media player

There are so many good solutions out there, most of which I probably do not have experience with, that said I have been around a bunch of media players over the last few years and I am currently using two setups, one for each TV.

1. Western Digital TV Live

This little thing plays friggen everything, never misses a beat and has never let me down. Easy to use and setup. It streams my videos, photos and music from my shared folders on my PC to my TV. Comes with all the necessary connections for HD etc. GUI lacks a little, nothing realy exciting. You can Facebook, Youtube, play games, Online Music Streaming Apps etc.

2. Plex Media Server

More complicated to setup and run, but well worth it. For this I am running my pc with Plex Media Server installed and my Samsung Smart Blue Ray Player has the Plex Client installed on it. The server scans your selected folders for content, then ads tags, posters, theme music, story plot, age rating, video and audio quality and all sorts of info. When you boot up your client it looks like Box Office on the DSTV Explora. When you watch a series, it will automatically have the next episode to watch ready for you on the home screen when it boots up. It also shows what has been watched and what hasn't. You can filter Genres, Actors, Producers, this thing is a charm!

Just my input, hope it helps.

Yeah I used the WDTV for years before Roku, and could never go back. the interface is too clunky and slow, and feature wise you can't even compare.

Re: Plex, couldn't agree more. I use it on my roku and it's an amazing media server solution for local content.

roku rocks. i have roku 3 and rocku sticks in the house.
but lets not forget a good old ps3..
or xbox..

most of us have one of these anyways..

I did the pricecheck thing, however seems takelot removed the product page now? Was there 45 minutes ago

I take that back - clicking on the actual search result gives me a missing product page.

Look at the model numbers

The 4230R offers voice search - anything else that makes it worth an additional R450?

The model numbers for the stick are the same yet the Takealot pricing is R300 less.

Sure, I meant Roku 4 is a bit overkill compared to Roku 3 or Roku stick as the only benefit is a faster processor for 4K streaming - other than that they're pretty much identical

Also got it for a bit of future proofing. When I get a 4K TV, my media player can handle it.
