Best value for money

Just in case my Audi ends up written off, I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions for a replacement.

I'd really like another Mini - I had one for years, and loved it, but I can't afford one now.

I've looked at quite a few cars that fit the essential spec;

- smallish - hatch-back
- automatic
- air-con
- ideally a usb connector, but that's just a wish!

I wonder what the best value for money is. As far as I can see, Hyundai seem to provide the best all-round value, with lots of extras, a good price and a good motor-plan. Golfs seem very over-priced for what they are - certainly compared to a mini.

There are affordable 2nd hand minis - but not automatic ones....

Whats your price range?

Audi A1?

Whilst the A1 will be popular, i dont think it will have that "fun" factor. And the extras always push it out of any kind of decent price bracket. Especially if, as I expect, it will retail for around 230k+. A clio sport will give you much more fun for the same price.

Apparently Audi A1 will start at R219k... Has a lot of stuff standard, but yeah you can go overboard with extras. Audi's list of all possible extras isnt short, although you have to be clinically insane to order some of them.

I want to testdrive one :) one of the major design priorities was fun and sportiness, I'm curious to know whether they managed that.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't heard of the Audi A1 - looking at the photograph, it's horribly ugly, with that huge grill like an old-fashioned yank-tank.

The Fiat looks a lot nicer, and is a much better price. I'd never considered an Italian car before, presumably they're more reliable than they used to be. A friend of mine had an Alfa Romeo some years ago and it gave terrible trouble.

If you want bang for buck and performance, how about a Peugeot 207GTI. yes, its french and are not know for the best service but for under R200k you wont find anything as good.

looks hot, performs well and its R100k cheaper than a cooper S. Normal price seems to be R250k on Peugeots website but looks like the above dealer is having some sort of special.

Fiat 500 MTA. :D
Best suggestion I have seen so far. It has performance and lots of character. While you might get performance from a Audi or Mini their characters are either too boring and cockish or too arrogant and idiotic.

500s are reliable, yes. They're based on the Panda, which is very reliable.
