Best value MB and RAM

both the asus and gigabyte boards are good. I would though shy away from the Intel boards they can be flaky and even when their not they have limited overclocking options.
 
Good suggestions... i have the 7800GTX 512 XXX and a 550w TT psu. I just noticed that it the Gigabyte doesn't have firewire...is there a board up in the range that supports this as i need to save on pci slots for other stuff. Even better with 2 LAN ports but not necessary as i have a pci card for that. I know i need to pay more than my initial budget for this, but just need to get it right first time.

So far it will be the Quad and OCZ ram.

Get a case with built in firewire ... that just plugs into the connector on the board and not the PCI ...
 
ASUSM-P5K64 WS - 4 PCIex16 Ports :O ... Quad SLI here we come ... now image 4 GTX set up :D
 
If you want ... go for the Asus P5K Deluxe/Wifi ... this has 2 x GB Lan and a Built in Firewire port. Only thing is this is ATI Crossfire not SLI. ... Costs about R350 more on top of the original package
If you want SLI ... then the Asus P5N-E SLI ... which is the NForce 650i chipset and also has Firewire but no 2 x Lan ... but is SLI not Crossfire. ... Costs About R250 more.
You can also go for the Asus P5N32-E SLI ... Which is NForce 680i and has firewire and 2 x lan. ... Costs about R350 more
 
Hmmmm ... seems Take2 sells OCZ memory cheaper then I can get it :/
 
I decided i will increase my budget to cater for a MB that does have dual Gb LAN and firewire....what can i get. I can't seem to find a P35 chipset that supports this
 
GA-G31MX-S2 is a GREAT board not and OC' king but will do the job :D only down side is 2 slots for RAM! 2 x 1GB stix sort that out!!

Right now the P35 series is still abit too much for me, BTW if you are interested here is my new PC's specs (comming soon + its a cheap-o!)

Gigabyte G31MCX-S2, Intel Core Duo E2180, 2048 DDRII 667, 8600GT :D freind has the same setup w/ a 2900Pro and getting 2.8Ghz on his mobo/CPU ;)
 
Get urself a E2160 and a slightly better board ... den overclock it to 3.0 or 3.2ghz ... apparently its easily doable on this processor :D
 
There was an earlier post in these forums (I think) that showed the overclocking power ... that leads to a review (I think at toms hardware) that shows that this processor can be overclocked to at least 3 ghz on the standard heatsink it comes with ... but you need a very good board and ram to overclock with it
 
I am looking at the Asus P5K Deluxe.... now i see it shows as supporting crossfire, will this have any effect on my Nvidia card. I don't plan to do sli. Must it be an NForce chipset?
 
It will not affect your Nvidia card, but why go for that board then? Rather go for a single Pci-x slot solution, same speed but cheaper.

it gives me everything else i need. What other board is there that has the same specs but single gpu? ie. dual lan, firewire, etc.
 
Just to stop confusion :)
Crossfire = Daul ATI cards
SLI = Daul NvDIA cards

now if a boards supports SLI or Crossfire, you can run any single card on it ;)
