why would someone with a really awesome mobo and good ram buy such a cheap cpu

just go lower on mobo get a faster cpu
 
Well you need a motherboard that will overclock well ... and I'm not an overclocker, but if I understand correctly, if you overclock the front side bus on the motherboard, then the ram speeds up to, hence you need good ram.
In the tests ... the E2160 OC'd on stock standard cooling beats the X6800 (non OC'd) in a lot of applications ... the link is somewhere on this forum.
The only difference between the processors will be the cache ... which AFAIK is more important in rendering and stuff then games.
The reason you would do it ... is cause it can save you about 7k on the processor.
 
True about the OC'd 2160 vs x6800!.. Awesome..
Apparently with a bit of voltage, the 2180 is hitting 3.5GHz+..
..
What options does the GA-G31MX-S2 have!? You should be able to get it well past 3GHz, and the 10x multi helps over the 2160's 9x.
Should jst need basic OC'ing options.. Bit of voltage, mem dividers possibly, and FSB..
 
yes at 3.5ghz im sure you need watercooling which would add another 2k onto the cpu

so why not just the quaddie overclock to 3ghz would amount to the same cost plus you would have four cores

also when u get a big overclock you need to cool your north bridge or that will overheat causing system instability

also if you overclock to that speed you need heatspeaders for your memory

add the cost for all of this and then just get a better cpu which you can overclock on air
 
So far i am going for the Asus P5K Deluxe and the Q6600. I only intend to overclock to the extend that i can on air cooling. I don't worry about getting 3.6ghz on this cpu. I will just add a better silent cpu fan.
 
The E2180's 800 MHz bus and 10x multi, also the E2160's 9x, means that you don't need huge FSB OC'ing boards, you can do it on any board that can go up to mid-high 300's.
Mild voltage increase to +/- 1.5v.
Check out some OC'ing reviews..
But yes, you will need an aftermarket cooler for such extreme speeds. Gigabyte Neon Cooler 775, is cheap and effective, bout R200.
So with a further small investment such as that, you can get performance of an X6800+.

Cooler Master GeminII is only bout R275, stick 2x 120mm fans on there and it's pretty much as good as air cooling gets..
 
I purchased a Gigabtye P35-DS3P mobo and 2 sticks of cheap Eusso DDR2 800 memory.. was R211 excluding vat per 1gig module:D

Runnin my e6550 @3.0ghz on stock cooling and the mem @ 858Mhz with 4-4-4-12 timings all on stock volts...

Quite pleased actually hehehe:p

Hi Guys.
Just wanna know ... is there a big difference between 5-5-5-15 and 4-4-4-12 performance wise, because I got Pearljam's system ... but now when I got back I see the ram was actually The Corsair Twin2X6400 2x1GB DDR800 5-5-5-15 and not the 6400C4 4-4-4-12 ... and it actually costs about R150 more to get the 4-4-4-12 Corsair memory ... what are your views ... would you take it back and pay the extra. I feel like a dumbass ... I must learn to read spreadsheets properly :P

I probably wouldn't bother to take it back and pay extra, but I might have paid the extra when I was buying it. There isn't really a big real world difference from tight memory timings, it helps for OC'ing...
 
How so does it help ... that is what PearlJam is planning to do anyway ... OC ... how strong would the performance difference be?

Don't really agree with that.There are definately superior air coolers out there...me thinks of any of the thermalrights...especially the newer ultima 90 which next to its big brother(T ultra extreme 120) is probably one of the best for about R400.

I'm not much of an OC'er myself, but being able to relax the RAM timings means you can clock the RAM higher, which is what you need when OC'ing. You actually just want quality when you buy OC'ing RAM, so I probably wouldn't bother swapping the RAM, it's still good quality.

The performance difference would be small, timings are just the latency on the RAM.
 
My idea is just to up the cpu to the max i can whilst still running cold and stable, i don't want to mess around with other stuff. I also decided to just keep the ram i got.

Just a note on Digital Addictions, it was very pleasant to deal with Itai and you can't beat those prices, will def. buy from him again.

Now the big work starts.....reinstall :(
